What are your reasons then? And I genuinely don't see what people are so upset about. It's really not that graphic or disturbing. There are plenty of films that are similar (delve into the mind of and what made a killer) and have everything people are upset about this film over, but even more extreme (and often better) I guess I was just a bit unimpressed with how "shocking" it was supposed to be. And the story simply needed another draft or two.

It was okay, in my opinion. I'm very temped to discuss the controversies surrounding it, but I won't. I'll just say it's certainly not the most violent or disturbing movie ever made. Anyways, Joaquin Phoenix did great (though not quite Heath Ledger-great), and the cinematography, as derivative as it was, was still wonderful, especially in a landscape of rather lackluster effort in that regards, epecially in that genre. It's not violent or sick enough to have left that much an impact on me, nor is the character and writing that complex. And there were a lot of moments that were supposed to be shocking that simply weren't. It was very predictable throughout. The only scene that surprised me, without spoiling it, was the subway scene (there are a few of them, but you'll know which one I'm talking about after you see it). And even that wasn't as strong as it should've been. Again, the direction, Phoenix's performance, and certain stand-out scenes prevent it from truly being bad, but it's certainly a mess.

You zeroed in on his best films well. Design for Living's very good too.

Have you seen any Preston Sturges? I just rewatched Sullivan's Travels and The Great McGinty (didn't make it all the way through McGinty the first time). Plan to watch Christmas in July soon. More screwball, but also witty and fresh. His best period was 1940-44.

Had a load of fun recently watching some Ernst Lubitsch films. To Be Or Not To Be, The Shop Around The Corner, Trouble In Paradise and Ninotchka. The dialogue in every one was delightfully witty and just fresh. Seemed somewhat out of place for 40s/30s releases.

I saw a stranger one... The house that Jack built. It's a good movie until the unnecessary last part, when von Trier decided emulate What Dreams May Come.
Even so, Matt Dillon was a excelent choice for the role.

Just watched this last night and was quite impressed. It's not a knockout, but it's definitely a film that knew what it wanted to be and succeeded at it. Incredibly immersive despite practically no dialogue. It's somewhere in my top 50 of the 2018, along with this recent watch:

Birds Of Passage. Probably somewhere in my top 100 of the decade. Incredibly strong imagery and a gripping plot. I should probably write more detail about it rather than a lazy 'you should watch this', but I'll leave it at that for now. Simply hoping it doesn't slip under people's radars. Ciro Guerra's definitely a name to watch.

(Also got around to watching Booksmart, which I'll combobulate a reaction to eventually)

Recently watched and enjoyed:

. Arctic (by Joe Penna): a survival tale in harsh conditions
. Stan & Ollie (Jon S. Baird): where tears and laughs mix, à la Chaplin
. Bad times at the El royale (Drew Goddard): as unpredictable as "Cabin in the woods" was; and thus totally different
. Green Book (Peter Farrelly): serious and light in one stroke; great acting

and last but not least

. Us (by Jordan Peele) : a horror film like "The Godfather" trilogy and "Goodfellas" are gangster flicks, or "2001..." and "Blade Runner" are sci-fi films. Genre-transcending stuff.

I can't wait to see that this Good Friday, in a Siskel Film Center triple feature also included Three Faces and Fantastic Planet
(And then going to a Music Box triple feature the next day to see The Big Sleep, Diane, and Her Smell with Alex Ross Perry giving a Q&A afterwards)

I see what all the fuss is about, but it certainly didn't get that kind of a reaction from me.

Interestingly it seems all the reviews are either raving five star love fests or abject condemnations.

Personally, I don't put it at either extreme, but I definitely lean toward the lower end of the scale. The occasionally clever symbolism can't compensate for the complete lack of plot, climax, etc. and the thoroughly deadpan acting of every last main character. The movie really didn't go anywhere and it didn't resolve anything. It was somewhat effective as a slice of life presented is a sort of retro Italian black and white landscape.

The title was also confusing to anyone who doesn't bother to research it. Despite the obvious Italian influence, the title has nothing to do with Italy. It is called Roma because it takes place in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City (something nobody who doesn't live there would know) and is never mentioned in the movie.

The Terror (1963): This is a Roger Corman movie that features Jack Nicholson and Boris Karloff, both of who worked with Corman before this. Roger Corman is known for being pretty tight with his spending so The Terror basically reused a set used on his adaptation of The Raven. As expected its pretty low budget and not really that great. Performances are good, but its fairly boring to watch.

What They Had (2018): A solid little family drama with a great cast. It features Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon, Robert Foster and Blythe Danner. The characters are pretty much recycled from better movies but the performances are really excellent and it portrays a family that is struggling with Alzheimer's disease which is pretty relatable.

The Last Laugh (2019): My first Netflix original of 2019 and I was pretty underwhelmed. Richard Dreyfuss and Chevy Chase team up to go on a road trip/comedy tour. The film just isn't funny, even when Dreyfuss is on stage doing standup.

The Bill Murray Story (2018): Of the films listed I recommend this one the most. Its a 70 minute documentary featuring Bill Murray at his best. This film makes an effort to explore Bill Murray's random adventures where he just randomly appears at a party with regular people. Its surprisingly moving and currently on Netflix.

Last night I checked out Bad Times at the El Royale, the Drew Goddard film. It came out in October and was swept away pretty quickly because no one went to see it. I was hoping to get to a theater to check it out, but unfortunately I was pretty busy at the time and only got to see A Star is Born and Halloween during October.

BTATER is essentially Goddard's attempt at a Tarantino movie. It especially feels similar to Pulp Fiction with several little pieces of the film taking place out of order. I was just completely in love with the movie. It is a bit long, but it never really felt that way. Probably because I was so in love with the world the film takes place in.

The ensemble cast is really great and I hope it'll find a second wind on Netflix or some other streaming site. The 6 year wait between films was way to long for Drew Goddard. This guy continuously does good work whether its writing or directing. I think he's expected to direct X-Force next if it still happens after the Disney purchase.

Last night I watched a movie that came out earlier this year called Assassination Nation. It was directed by Sam Levinson, who is the son of Barry Levinson.

Its another film that is sort of criticizing our modern society in the world of social media. I don't know how much money it made, but its violence was enough to make it fun and I wouldn't be shocked if it developed a bit of a cult following in the years to come.
