Quote:

the idea that 'emo' is what you say it is and can't possibly cover the things that you don't like, which is akin to me saying Soulja Boy isn't hip-hop because his music doesn't represent any of the four elements - hopefully you agree that last one is patently absurd

Is this subject zero? I think this is subject zero.

The badly worded “emo isn’t that” has more to do that I don’t agree with the semantic change of the genre which I happen to be pretty well read on. Bands that fell in the “mall scene” between 2003 and 2007 I feel as I said could not be called the genre by somebody who understands the mechanics of the genre as instrumentally there is nothing bridging them and the only connection is “these bands liked a record by Sunny Day Real Estate” once—it’s the same thing with pop-punk for me, though that might be a bit more self-centered of me but believe me when I say I vocalize “education” with emo because it’s so obscure in actual reality of the information regarding it. Didn’t you do the same thing once for dubstep when people mislabeled that? Why was I picked out for emotional badly worded ranting?

Quote:

your comments here come across like kidamnesiac's "if you don't agree with me you must be a noob" with a superior sentence structure and vocabulary (the teenage girls thing; assuming that because somebody is younger than you that they don't have as deep an understanding of certain things (this thread)

Which is not what I feel or believe.

As for the teenage girl thing; this is semantics, but I was a teenaged boy when I first heard and hated the song for the very same reasons. It wasn't... agist? of me but rather a poor generalization to vocalize a hatred of BAD writing and what felt like consumerist cash-grab... but I've said this.

Quote:

and I feel like you do say things like that quite a lot. This is where I take issue. I won't be inclined to call you elitist or condescending if you don't say anything that could be construed (and I put that as politely and as diplomatically as possible) as elitist or condescending.

I don’t feel like I state such things though; outside of badly worded moments (Death Cab, this thread) I feel they are few in number if at all. I’m plenty okay with people having different tastes, ideas and such on subjective topics and the like. I hope you understand and… maybe we can get back to square one and I can stop being a nervous wreck who thinks I’ve become a bad person to earn such ire.

I'm regretting even posting in this thread, I'm sorry everyone. Skinny, I don't think you're entirely in the wrong. Gowie, I don't think you're entirely in the wrong. In my place of whatever my mind's been up to of late, though, this is getting to be too much, not volume wise but in terms of content, that I just don't know that I can come back to this thread.

Lots of love for both of you, though. Remember that you're both real people behind these keys, that you've both got other stuff going on IRL, that you've both got other things floating in your mind. I really do care about both of you and I just can't keep reading anything else here, I'm sorry. I just can't right now, there's too much else going on. Just please, please try and get along. Christ knows this site has its share of problems, of infighting, but when it comes down to it, we're some sort of really messed up family. We've all got common interests and even if our personalities clash, I think it's really a special thing that we've all found each other here.

I'm sorry again.

That's all well and good, I don't come to this forum to start arguments. But, on a fairly regular basis, your comments here come across like kidamnesiac's "if you don't agree with me you must be a noob" with a superior sentence structure and vocabulary (the teenage girls thing; assuming that because somebody is younger than you that they don't have as deep an understanding of certain things (this thread); the idea that 'emo' is what you say it is and can't possibly cover the things that you don't like, which is akin to me saying Soulja Boy isn't hip-hop because his music doesn't represent any of the four elements - hopefully you agree that last one is patently absurd, and goes some way to showing why I take such an issue with what you've said). I don't say things like, "power metal is for loners who sit at their computers all day and take video games way too seriously", and I feel like you do say things like that quite a lot. You have previous form here, recently dismissing a Death Cab song as "music for teenage girls", as though music for teenage girls is inherently worse than other music. It's total elitism. You're older and have heard more music than others users here, and it often comes across as though you think that makes you a "better" listener. I don't mention these things to make you feel like shit or to goad you into an argument, I say them because I think they're true and it really fucking pisses me off. I wouldn't allow a friend to talk down to people and patronise them like that IRL, and I take umbrage with it when I see it here.

Well, it certainly seems that way in the tone you have taken with me in the last six months which has been the complete opposite of how you responded to me before. We’ve had neutral discussions and I’m fine with being told that I worded something a bit shit because I do when I’m typing casually. I actually did NOT assume his opinion is not valid to hold as you can tell how I responded, but choose to think I’m some self-appointed overlord of organized sound. I was merely wondering since it’s been a LONG TIME since he listened to it that perhaps he should REVISIT it now that he has GROWN not just in height but in what I imagine understanding and perception. Which apparently even through that he still doesn’t dig the record which is fine; it’s still a favorite of mine, but its not an objectively golden record or anything.

Shit dude, I like forum personalities to be PLEASANT not this antagonistic bluntness you seem to be throwing at only the people you dislike and I certainly feel like this is a constant as you made it very clear that you think I’m a complete tyrannical pseudo-intellectual know-it-all elitist which I’m not. I do have some views that are a little obtuse as my interview states (objectivism in art, for example) but I don’t define it as absolute, ever.

As for the comment on Death Cab for Cutie; I’ve always thought that song in particular was a financial cash-grab at the sappy teenage girl audience at the time that was hardly authentic. I could be wrong; I still don’t like the writing of the tune which I went on to elaborate when Brandon chewed me out for it in his own way which I tried to clarify/apologize for; I certainly didn’t mean to attack his taste as I am not that type of person.

I personally think a lot of your attacks are very overtly assumptive, but I don’t know why—I clarify on these things and I certainly care about everyone on this forum to the point where your words physically upset me.

I'm just tired to these direct and indirect attacks and I feel as we are both adults we can treat each other better so it doesn't devolve into hate and a war of minds. Both of us are mature enough to not degrade to such behavior and certainly can possibly understand and respect one another better than basically causing emotional strain each other.

I’m literally emotionally mad at this because I don’t want this behavior enacted on me; who would?

Who wants to be hated?

I'm not trying to bait you, but you just dismissed perfectly valid opinions about this album - opinions that I also happen to hold - on the basis that he was probably a kid when he heard it last.
EDIT: I can't believe I get so aggravated on such off-handed comments. Maybe I need to not come to BEA for awhile and focus on my other hobbies.

I don't think he's trying to bait you into anything. Skinny's a good guy and I honestly think he's above anything like that. He took issue with something you said and frankly, I'd not even known you said it. It's been way too long, but I'm honestly having the same experience now as I did then, and I see why skinny could've taken what you said as a "the youths on this site are dumb", but that's less your fault and more the fault that a lot of people, this site and otherwise, discredit the opinions of yungins cuz we're young. That's a little extreme, though, tbh ...

Anyways, it'd be a pity not to see you around here, but do whatever's best for you in the end. Do come back, though, if you decide to break, I like seeing you round here!

Moving on from my fangasam; I really like the lyrical songwriting, mood of the record, and instrumentation—like I said it’s a more strange contemporary to a record like Built to Spill’s Perfect from Now On or 764-Hero’s Get Here and Stay. Great switches from heartfelt melodies to eccentric shouting, etc. basically Brock being a genius as usual.
“never felt special”

What? This is one of Modest Mouse’s most concise records they ever produced in their entire career. I just can’t fathom how this is seen as mundane or passable—even if you discount the as usual brilliant lyrical songwriting. The songs are so cut out of Built to Spill’s much more quirky and interesting cousin who totally Built to Spill enjoys the company of but feels like shit around with other people around.

…

Okay, yeah that analogy was just weird. Regardless, this is a very special record with Brock at his songwriting peak both instrumentally and lyrically. While he still continued to inspire on the next records, this one is like a snapshot of his soul at the time of conception. I go back and forth thinking this or Lonesome Crowded West is better and they are essential indie rock records so they are certainly not passable or forgettable pieces of art and PROOF that a major label doesn’t consume an artist’s credibility and integrity. It’s heartfelt, introspective, and wonderful.

I don’t like saying things like this but how long ago did you think this was forgettable? Perhaps it’s time to revisit the record with a clean and… older view?

or a lyrics sheet.
