I can understand that. Novelty/parody music annoys me sometimes too, but only in large doses. Weird Al doubles as nostalgia for me as well, since he was pretty big among grade school kids back in the early 90s.

The concept of being a "fan" of music like this makes no sense to me, though. It's not meant to be listened to, it's meant to provide a laugh and an existential counterpoint to avid "fandom." I hear stories about sick people who approached the Beatles or Elvis and asked them to touch them in the hopes that their illness might be cured. When musician worship reaches that level of absurdity, people like Weird Al make a lot of sense to me.

as i child, weird al was tops for me through out, occasionally bumped for an MC Hammer stint. As I grew and started connecting the dots to what makes music so great, I eventually got into psychedelic drugs. as I was tripping testes one night I thought I'd test my comfort zone and play some weird al, specifically Weird Al's 'UHF' which I have probably heard into the several hundred times throughout my awkward childhood. Well, at that point weird al had trumped any drug laced, music induced fear NIN's had previously instilled in me. I played "Hamsters From the Planet Near Mars" and it was like a window I was finally tall enough to look at. The view I bared witness to was an America, championing mediocrity, blissfully ignorantly cackling at Bob Saget as he talks over a video of someone getting hit in the balls in his best (worst?) cartoon voice. (I wonder if this is in some way of nature trying to sterilize the drooling masses). I guess my point here is that LSD is a good thing, inasmuch I have came to a self realization, weird al and bob saget both have seemingly used the drug since (in my mind) and have become something much better than in their previous manifestations.
I think because he's trying to parody Dylan's lyrical style, which can sometimes seem random and rambling. SHB is one of the prototypical Dylan tracks, so I actually think it's pretty clever.

For me, Weird Al is good for an occasional cheap laugh. Not sure he ever intended to be anything more than that.

Yes, but why would I want to listen to a song full of palindromes? Why has he chosen 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' to pastiche in his pointless wordplay game? Why do we live in a world were Weird Al can not only exist but thrive? Why am I in this thread?

I recently rewatched a few Weird Al videos for the first time in 5 years, and they weren't nearly as funny as I remember them.
I think trapped in the Drive Thru is still quite clever though, how it draws humour from very ordinary conversations.
Though I must admit I am really NOT familiar with his repertoire but I do think he is hilarious and talented but I still consider him as a comedian rather than as musician.

He's both...and I put forth for your consideration his original composition that would probably be my favorite Wierd Al track (only the video is a parody, the song is his):

Dammit, VEVO has the original video and it's not the full song...
Link

Full song:

Link

Also the Star Wars fan in me is quite fond of these two:

Though I must admit I am really NOT familiar with his repertoire but I do think he is hilarious and talented but I still consider him as a comedian rather than as musician.

I consider that anything that cannot laugh at itself does not deserve to be taken seriously. I take music seriously and Weird Al makes me laugh at music so I think this is a very important role ... in the end it is only music but that does not make any less significant in the grand scheme of things. Frank Zappa asked whether humor belonged in music and the answer is clear ... humor belongs anywhere. If you cannot laugh about something, then you are pathologically serious about it which in itself is laughable by people who are not pathologically serious about it.

In the end we are all everyone of us and aything we do just a grain of sand in a universe of unfathomably great size, But that does not make that grain of sand any less important. A single grain of sand can destroy the best oiled machine, or be no bigger or no smaller than an infinity of grains of sands that make up a desert. Without any single grain of sand, there would never ever be any single desert. Therefore no Oasis (although Oasis as a band sucks so that would be a good thing right?). Desert. Dessert, pie, pi, 3,14, three, tree of life, life is weird, weird Al, full circle ... Ok I am officially drunk.

Good night all.
