I need to listen to Souls of Mischief again. Haven't heard that album since it was on cassette. I'll pick up some Ras Kass and Chino XL too. Thanks.

Well the west coast is a style. I don't think people will listen to them if they want to have mind altering experiences. Tribe, PE, KRS- One, Common Semse, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Black Star def. challenge people's mind more than west coasters. On the West the rappers are more about the 'hard' and 'gangster' raps; that's just the style I prefer because it goes well with the production they make. My opinion would be west coast has tremendous production and the style is more suited to my taste.

Some you might enjoy...
Ras Kass- Probably the most complex west coast lyricist, uses lots of biblical references, historical context, most of the shit i still don't understand
Chino XL- King of Punchlines
DJ Quik- Excellent Flow
Crooked I
Saigon
Rappin' 4-Tay
Souls of Mischief- Similar to Wu-Tang, lesser known and probably not as consistent, but released a great album
The Coup- Kind of pro-black lyrics
Dre Dog
Mac Mall
E-40's "In a Major Way" or "Game Related"
Compton's Most Wanted- Slow, extremely hardcore lyrics, almost a bit too much for my taste.
RBL Posse- One of my favorites
Jayo Felony
Hollow Tip
Dre D
Kurupt- Popular, but his old stuff is superb

I have to admit to preferring the east coast style of hip-hop much more than the west or any other region. Who do you think are the most lyrical west coast rappers, dp39? I can't think of any west coast rappers that have really impressed me lyrically.

The Click (e-40 when he wasn't gay), Spice 1, Brotha Lynch Hung, Too $hort, MC Eiht, Dre D, Cold World Hustlers, South Central Cartel, 11/5, U.D.I., The D.O.C, Pharcyde, DJ Quik, Wc and the madd Circle, Luniz, MC Breed, Dre Dog, Mac Mall, Mc Dre, Ray Luv, Ill Mannered Playas, Celly Cel, Compton's Most Wanted, The Coup, Above the Law, BG Knockout and Dresta, Ras Kass.

I'm happy to help anybody come into contact with any one of these artists albums, just PM me if really interested.

i read a 2pac biography a while back.. funny how he was actually grew up on the east coast and used the moniker 'mc new york' when he first started out..

eastcoast rap has the lyrical edge, but westcoast produced it better.. dre, pac, snoop, nwa, quik, warren g, dogg pound, cube etc all had those banging funky beats, man

as for the whole gangster thing, i'm not sure it's really possible to juggle the two careers.. certainly very little point financially.. i mean we're not talking al capone gangster here, we're talking about street thug/crack dealing 'gangsters'.. why risk your life making a few hundred on the side of a million?

Yeah, I guess I don't think any rapper is really a gangsta because they all live past 30 and are out of prison and definately don't continue anything hugely gang-related they may have been doing. But I still uphold the view that Biggie was the most aggressive and the most gangsta out of all the fake gangsta rappers.

And to jewsom, I totally agree with you. If you listen to Nas' Illmatic, released within the same year months before Ready to Die, Nas already has established the New York rap style. Also, both of them use tons of the same phrases and rap about the same things. But, I still put Biggie ahead of everyone else...

To add to 90s list (if they haven't already)
Jane's Addiction- Ritual de lo Habitual
Pavement- Slanted and Enchanted
Sure, everyone can sing about being a gangsta, but I feel like Biggie was a gangsta and I feel like you can hear that he killed several people in his voice. I don't get that feeling from Nas, Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, 50 cent, Tupac, no one.

Please tell me you're joking. I don't mean to be a dick, but Biggie is a fake. It's well known he didn't have it as bad as he claims he did, even his mom will attest to that. Biggie was hardly a gangsta, his friends and family would say he was the biggest jokester and the funny fat guy growing up and never even owned a gun or did anything that thuggish. If you don't believe me, read up on it and watch a lot of movies.

In that sense, I don't think any rapper is a murderer, please.

Interesting. I always liked his sense of humor and personality more than his flow, and his rhyme patterns were pretty textbook east coast rap at that time and not that extraordinary. If he didn't have a certain wit/image that separated him from his contemporaries, I doubt we'd be talking about him right now.

Listen to Ready to Die and tell me that guy isn't a great rapper. Or at least a very good one. He has an amazing flow.

purple wrote:

He's probably not as influential as Wu-Tang but his raps were the most aggressive anyone has ever had.

In that sense, I don't think any rapper is a murderer, please.

lest we forget.

Not for everybody. Besides, I assume the tournament is about musical quality, not 'cultural significance'.

Apologies, 90s music is "my baby" and as such i can get very excited.
Elsewhere, I believe what the tournament is based on is decided by the individual voter.

If the 90's is your baby, I recommend you set up a playdate with some of the nerdy indie rock babies ( not just the one's that got all the toys and attention) at the park.

Sweet! Where should i start? Any suggestions? really its my memories that make it so. It was a great time for me. The music was another party/ entity that was present, which i fell in love with. perhaps much like the baby boomers and the beatles, generally speaking.

Well, if you want suggestions, check out my nomination list. The 90's was among other things the golden age of indie rock. Pavement was the indie rock Nirvana in a lot of ways and just as important of a band. Definitely check them out. Check out Guided by Voices, Liz Phair's first album, The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, and of course, My Bloody Valentine for starters.
