I had seen you said it had surf influences and thought it was a good way to introduce myself to the genre,really liked it.Will probably move straight onto those albums next,cheers,will keep y'all updated with how I get on.That song you posted is sick,can't wait to hear the album.

They all three formed around the same time in the same scene, Orange County (part of the larger LA scene). This thread made me decide to adventure some hardcore punk bands. I found a band called Choking Victim and their album No God/No Manager went on my chart as soon as I finished listening to it.

That was hell of a nice surprise to find such an awesome album.

I'm not too much of an expert on hardcore, and I'm also working my way through it these days (I'm planning on watching this topic very closely for instance), but still I'd advise (repetitions intended : the more they're quoted, the more you'll tend to listen to them first):

I was very disappointed, however, by Milo Goes to College by Descendents. I couldn't understand its reputation, maybe it needs a few more listens.
I was unimpressed by the few records I've heard by Agnostic Front and Fear. They need re-listening and further discovering though.

I really have sort of a hardcore obsession these days, so I'll post whenever I listen to some here if anybody's interested about a fresh opinion (I'm fairly new to hardcore except for acts like Dead Kennedys or - but it gripped me instantly

Suicidal Tendencies earlier stuff.
And my personal favorite, D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) - also their earlier stuff. Actually I prefer their later stuff but that's more of crossover thrash, not so much hardcore anymore.

Wow, I just began to be interested in hardcore a few weeks ago. That topic is sick. Please people, more suggestions! This is great.

I personally began with the Kennedys, and FFFRV is is my top 20 now. I wasn't so impressed at first, but it re-listened to it and it was completely crazy. I like Black Flag and Minor Threat, too. I never thought of X as hardcore, but whatever they are, they're awesome, even if I didn't like them so much at first. Will listen to Bad Brains, The Germs and The Gun Club soon. They seem to be a good place to continue.

Hardcore culture really kickstarted not as a music scene but as a minor gang in Los Angeles to protect punk kids and punks (like The Gun Club and X) from an abusive older generation of what are now termed dadrockers (I literally could not make this up). My War and Generic Album (from Bay area!) might also be called sludge acts, because they are heavier and slower than typical "hardcore" acts like Bad Brains or Minor Threat (which I might mention are from a totally different scene (D.C.) characterized by a totally different sound. But at this point you're really discussing the ship of Theseus because these are fundamentally punk bands with punk beginnings making the same music they did previously in a different tuning and slowed down two seconds. I mean, how do you bin bands in the progression from hardcore to sludge to grunge? That was a rhetorical question, because I would laugh at any definition you propose. Binning bands into genres is a feeling and I feel they are hardcore.

Lastly, Killing Joke. These guys are in fact usually labelled as post punk, largely because they were British, and hardcore tends to be an American thing while post punk seems to be a British thing. Unlike most post punk bands, Killing Joke also relied more on heavy straightforward riffs more than most, usually "atmospheric" post punk groups. I might be just as comfortable calling Gang of Four or The Fall hardcore. Again, I think it's a regional thing.

Ultimately, I'm just pissed that anyone thinks they know anything about genres. As I've called out Tekin on this before, philosophers of music have a difficult enough time making fundamental definitions to differentiate classical, jazz, and rock. What makes you think you could ever satisfactorily subdivide the subgebre genre of punk?

Fair enough, I feel educated now. Like I said, I'm not too versed in the scene so I'm just going by general knowledge. Clearly you know it far better than me. =D

Check out Title Fight if you can find them. I saw them live and they were pretty good... I think. I don't really know hardcore all that well. The crowd was pretty into it though.

Great suggestions, but I don't see how those are hardcore. Fire of love never struck me as hardcore at all. But still one of my fave rexords. Black Flag My War was when they had changed their direction big time and had slowed down and beefed up their sound a lot. It's very metal-esque. Flipper I can see counting. Killing joke I don't know much about, but I never knew them as Hardcore. And X is pretty much the greatest Punk Band of all time in my opinion.... But I don't feel they are hardcore.
Fuck! I'm nit-picking and I'm annoying myself with my bullshit. I'm sorry purple. 🙁 those are great records.
