Considering that it is the same list that you copied and pasted from the top rap albums thread, I doubt you put any thought into your recommendations. It's your stock rap list that I've seen several times.

But prove me wrong and explain your recommendations.

Cypress Hill are a great rap group! Their debut is one of their best too 😄

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest is often overlooked in favor of their other albums. I think Q-Tip comes across outstanding on that record. Definitely worth a listen!

Well, as I'm just getting into rap I would be interested in hearing some recommendations. My fav. album so far I guess is Illmatic, which I imagine is a relatively straight-forward and mainstream work. I'd love to hear more albums like that, with good introspective/dynamic lyrics and great multi-layered beats. I'm not looking for anything too raw, I'd actually like to hear something really well produced, but still interesting. The other rappers I like are along the lines of Eminmem & Kanye West...hehe yeah. I know nothing. Probably a big part of why I misunderstood this thread to begin with.

But then no more.

The way you opened your post is not entirely obvious what you want to discuss. It's actually typed in a lazy conversational style and the way I interpreted it was "I think the best lyrical rapper is MF DOOM (or whoever)". And although it's a subtle difference, it's not the same as "okay, let's discuss who has the best lyrics in rap. I'm not interested in the delivery, the style, the flow, just who writes the best lyrics?" Something like that would have been clearer. And I think you attacked people who posted afterwords either because a) they disagreed with you or b) they misunderstood you.

Really Jewsom? You think you couldn't be any clearer? I really don't understand that. Even if most people did understand where you were coming from, I didn't. And I think you could have been clearer. And I think you would be more persuasive if you showed a little more self-effacement. I mean, you're Jewish aren't you?

Flow and style-- depending on how you define-- is part of the form, so that would be fair game. Guess I should've been clearer. Whatevs. Yes, I wasn't totally interested in getting into all aspects of delivery outside of the rhythm of the sounds and the cadence, i.e. I didn't want to get into "booming voice" talk. Sorry.

I don't know. I didn't think I would need to define lyricism.

Alright, can we revive this thread?

How about we just talk about favorite rappers, using whatever criteria you want.

yeah, to be fair, it was clearly stated that this was a thread on lyrical proficency.. if i was picking my favourite rapper with all factors considered, it would probably be eminem for personal reasons, closely followed by dre for his outstanding production.. i chose canibus in the instance as he's the best i've ever heard on the semantic circuit.. considering all factors, he would be 4th or 5th

too spice the broth a little more, here's my favourite rap track:

Okay, Elston. You know, I think you're really cool and my anger at 8-tracks spilled over to you. I don't want you to think that I am incapable of understanding someone's point of view, simply because I point out things that I find to be problematic and irreconcilable. Ironically, the complaints came from people who attacked my point of view on rap. People have been far from understanding with me. 8-tracks simply wrote my opinion off from the beginning, without even giving me a reason.

So, if you were to start a Greatest Rapper thread, what things do you think should be discussed?

Thank you, Shankly.
If I may interject an outsiders' opinion for a moment, JJ was pretty clear in her first post about what she wanted to discuss in the thread, so she does kind of have a point. On the other hand, maybe the thread should have been entitled: "Best Rap Lyricists" to avoid confusion.

Now, whether JJ is obstinate or closed-minded is another matter entirely. I will just say this: It is frustrating when the discourse becomes more about the individual posting comments than the topic itself. Talk about a waste of time. Can we stop making it personal?

It would. You're obstinate in your convinctions and incapable of understanding someone else's point of view.

Do you honestly think the music isn't important to rapping?

I understand the distinctions you're making, but some of the stuff you say is pretty ridiculous. I won't bother quoting you because it's a waste of time. In fact, debating with you is always a waste of time.

No, the problem is people not knowing how to define rap and blaming me for it. I wished to discuss the rhythm and poetry of rhythm and poetry. If you want to make a more general thread on hip-hop music, please do so. This thread was going well until people started complaining.

The music is important to hip-hop music, undoubtedly. But the skill of a rapper cannot possibly be gauged from the music. Beats =/= Rap. If I want to discuss screenwriting and not cinematography, that is valid, even though both are surely important to the final product.

If you understand the distinction, why would you call my definition narrow?

Sorry for getting nasty, but I should not be blamed for wanting to discuss the rhythm and poetry of rhythm and poetry. Seems perfectly valid to me.
