Automatic for the People is still the only album of theirs I've listened to all the way through. I intend to listen to Murmur soon, but, despite AftP being my #2 album of all time, I've never much cared for anything else of theirs that I've heard.

This. In fact, "Drive" off of AftP succeeds because it repeats itself so much and uses the repetition to build to its orgasmic climax. Yes, it is orgasmic.

Agreed, I used to love Stand, but don't like it these days, I put it in the same bracket as Shiny Happy People, and Orange Crush and Pop Song 89 I've never liked.

R.E.M. is one band that reaches many different people many different ways.

As for Reckoning, So. Central Rain, Time After Time & Camera are not bad but not enough to make it good as an album and (Don't Go Back To) Rockville is a sad excuse for a song.

On a seperate note, my Favourite song by them is Country Feedback, and if anyone hasn't seen it, have a look on youtube for the version they did on the road movie dvd. Never played it on the 3 times I saw them and after hearing that, how I wish they would have!
