i just listened to that zombies album for the first time about a month ago. I was very surprised how complete a psych-pop album it was.

Illmatic captures a time and a place so perfectly that, listening to it, you feel instantly transported there. It contains arguably the best rapper of all-time rapping his best verses over the greatest set of beats he ever got, courtesy of some of hip-hop's best producers (Large Pro, Preemo, Tip). It's lean and pure and doesn't contain a second of filler. It's not only the album every other hip-hop album is measured against, but the blueprint for many of them, and with good reason. And it's filled with more quotables than you can shake a stick at ("I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death"; "you'll never catch me in the streets without a ton of reefer, that's like Malcolm X catching jungle fever"; "that buck that bought a bottle coulda struck the lotto"; "that's why we get high, 'cause you never know when you're gonna go"). I'm loathe to call any album "perfect", but Illmatic is damn close.
