DEFINITIONS

From Wikipedia:
Post-punk is a rock music genre that paralleled and emerged from the initial punk rock explosion of the late 1970s. The genre is an artier and more experimental form of punk. Post-punk laid the groundwork for alternative rock by broadening the range of punk and underground music, incorporating elements of krautrock (particularly the use of synthesizers and extensive repetition), dub music, American funk and studio experimentation into the genre.[citation needed] It was the focus of the 1980s alternative music/independent scene, and led to the development of genres such as gothic rock and industrial music.

New wave music is an ambiguous category of pop or rock music from between the late 1970s to mid-1980s with ties to the original wave of punk rock. New wave music was first considered the same as punk rock before being identified as a genre in its own right, incorporating aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, disco and 1960s pop music.

From RYM:
With its roots in the mid to late 1970s, Post-Punk is a movement that followed on the heels of the initial Punk Rock explosion. While retaining its roots in Punk Rock, Post-Punk is generally more complex and introverted. Also, musicians tend to be much more experimental, often incorporating influences from Dub, Electronic, Funk, Krautrock, Art Rock, and Experimental music. Classic examples include Joy Division, Talking Heads, Public Image Ltd., Gang of Four, Television, Wire, The Chameleons, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Magazine, The Birthday Party, and The Fall. Unlike its more pop-based counterpart New Wave, Post-Punk often deals with darker subject matter. Post-Punk is also often considered one of the primary predecessors of Alternative Rock.

From Urban Dictionary:
The longest-lived sub-genre of music. New Wave's roots can be traced back to 1969, when David Bowie first released the song "Space Oddity". In 1973, when Bowie re-released "Space Oddity", the precursor to New Wave, punk rock was born. Throughout the mid-1970's, Punk bands such as The Ramones, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Sex Pistols and The Clash were discovered. During the disco backlash of 1979 and 1980, Punk rose to the forefront, while other bands like Blondie, Talking Heads, R.E.M., U2 and Devo began what would become the initial New Wave movement, which was capped off in 1981 when Billy Joel mentioned New Wave in the song "It's Still Rock & Roll to Me". During the early 1980's, there was a lot of band evolution taking place, as Bauhaus broke up, reformed as Tones on Tail, then reformed as Love and Rockets, while Mick Jones of The Clash formed Big Audio Dynamite, The Sex Gang Children split in half and became Culture Club, Vince Clarke, formerly of Depeche Mode, formed Yaz and then Erasure, and The English Beat split into bands such as Style Council, Modern English and Fine Young Cannibals.

In short, if you look anywhere online, there will be different views. Yes some bands are more post punk or new wave than others. In retrospect, more care at the beginning.

If you think one band deserves the title more than the other, vote that way. Don't just vote for the band because you like them think of the context the tournament.

                          HARKAN'S ABSENCE

Hi all,

I will be away on camp from today til Tuesday 3pm (Aus Central Time). Not a huge loss for some of you but it means that the next lot of matchups might be a little late.

Also with my senior and year 10 drama classes having performances in the next few weeks, my traffic on here might slow down. Or, depending on how annoyed I am with them, increase to distract me from incompetence.

Thankyou,

Harkan.

P.S.: Split Enz for the win!
Maybe a system where the 32 highest ranked bands on the site receive a bye into the 2nd round, while the other 64 start in the first round, not sure what people will think of that but seems like a plausible system to me.

So as I travel back home tomorrow, I am sure discussion will ensue here.

The main conversation I want is in regards to the 96 bracket system.

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

This requires seeding. Might be difficult to choose. However if it is 24 matches each side of the table, the semi final on each side could come down to 3 teams with the top 2 to go to the final. Something like that.

Ideas?
