Fela Kuti's "Zombie" and "Expensive Shit" for funk. I've heard about half of each album from an anthology... but according to pitchfork both are great as a whole.

William Parker - The Peach Orchard
William Parker - O'Neal's Porch
Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages
David S. Ware - Godspelized

You wont regret with any of those, and let me know if you need more.

In terms of funk and soul, you can't go wrong with James Browns' Live at the Apollo, Parliament's Mothership Connection, Funkadelic's One Nation Under A Groove, Eddie Hazel's Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs, or Bootsy Collins' Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band. These are the cornerstones of a funk collection in the same way that you can't have a real classic rock collection without Revolver.

Reggae I know next to nothing about, but Funky Kingston by Toots and the Maytals is supposed to be pretty incredible. And with avant-garde jazz, check out material from Zu and Sun Ra.

Hope that helps!

Hey, I'm looking to expand a few horizons.

1- Reggae - Beyond Bob Marley & the Wailers, I know little. Help Please.

2- Avant-Garde Jazz - Love Mingus, Roland Kirk, Ornette, Art Blakey... have only a handful of records- any significant stuff done in the past 20 years?

3- Soul/Funk - Like the more punk tinged stuff, but open to everything.
