I think they are both very talented, but i don't really love either.
I do think U2 is one of the most overrated bands of all time though

I don't really like either that much. I am pretty much indifferent to them. I don't get why everyone dislikes U2 so much though. They aren't "that" bad.

I definitely enjoy U2 way more. I really like a lot of R.E.M.'s stuff, but I do think U2 is better overall.

I'm split. I guess i'd side with R.E.M. if i had to, but it's pretty close.

i'd give them both 2 very good-to-great albums apiece, r.e.m.'s "murmur" and "automatic for the people" and u2's "joshua tree" and "achtung baby". But i will agree that a few more r.e.m. albums approach that pantheon.

Got both LP's and everytime these sounds amazing and I can't rank them. I think these "vs" thread are pointless. Both are great band with lot of spirit and strength in their music !

They're just incomparable in terms of the vibe I get from them and the brand of music they have tried to bring about. I've never cared about U2 (though for sometime I really like Joshua Tree) but I've been in love with R.E.M. since I heard about them for the first time and they've been a good travelling companion.

R.E.M. by a considerable margin. I basically have to agree with everything Norman said about them, though he's admittedly somewhat more tolerant of U2 than I am. But yeah, R.E.M. by a country mile.

I'm not a U2 basher - I'm not a lover, either. REM has to win this, they've accompanied me for so long - so have U2, mind you, and I used to be very fond of them in my early teen age. I somehow find I can't listen to U2 anymore, they seem to lack a certain subtlety that would be needed to make their stadium rock more appealing. of course, I am aware they have worked with the likes of Eno and Lanois, still, there's something about their bravoura and bombastic style that is too often depressing to me. Occasionally, a good song comes out (it's been a long time though).

REM, on the other hand, have always been an old favourite. I met them with the Eponymous compilation, and they have accompanied me ever since, I love their early mix of new-wave sensibility and post-Byrds guitars. My favourite REM period is still their IRS years, but they have lovely numbers later on. Some of their LPs fall downright flat (from Monster on, mainly, with the occasional pleasant surprise, like Up), but they always have one or two lovely songs even in their darkest hours (e.g. "Let Me In" on the somewhat poor Monster).

In short, REM ♥

I don't like either except for Automatic for the People, which seems to be an anomaly from a band I otherwise consider mediocre. So I went with R.E.M.
