swedenman wrote:

Nevermind, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and The Low End Theory, at least, though there may be more. Screamadelica came out just one day before, unfortunately.

That's two great albums and one decent album against a great album and a masterpiece.

The way I see it: Blonde on Blonde > Pet Sounds > Nevermind = The Low End Theory > Blood Sugar Sex Magik
And yeah, this will not change very fast. You'll note I granted much importance to Nevermind. Even ranked it above Blonde on blonde in terms of my concept of how influential it is/was. And I have Nevermind on my chart, so I understand the love.

Agree to disagree on that.

But agree to agree that both May 16, 1966 and Sept 24, 1991 were both great days for album releases.
On terms of how important or influential the albums are (both totally arbitrary and impossible to really measure) it goes

Blonde On Blonde is a great album, stuff like "I Want You" "Visions Of Johanna" "Just Like A Woman" are all plain amazing. But some of the more blues-rockish songs... I dunno, whereas they were at least interesting on "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Highway 61 Revisited" they just started to wear by now. That and I don't really like "Sad Eyed Lady" (though this may change in the future)

Pet Sounds on the other hand, is absolutely wonderful, and probably the only album to never leave my top 10.

Well, maybe that and ITAOTS.

dafuq? Dude if you're just finding an album "nice and that's all" after 100 listens, you should have given up on it a long time ago. There's plenty of music you can love out there so there's no need to waste your time like that.

Blonde on Blonde by a long shot for me, but both are massive, sprawling, fantastic albums that are the work of one artist at their absolute peak

Then there's a second tier (which I still adore) including Blonde on Blonde, Another Side of, Desire, Love & Theft, Bringing It All Back Home, and maybe The Times They Are A-Changin' and Oh Mercy too. After that there are still albums I go back to (Infidels, Self Portrait, Bob Dylan, Modern Times, even Saved occasionally). After that there's nothing that I think warrants regular relistening. Obviously there are great songs here and there. But yeah, I'd probably put the ones I listed originally above Another Side of. Not really sure why, something about that album isn't quite as stunning as the others. That said, it's still an amazing album. Getting back on topic though, I couldn't honestly say I prefer it to Pet Sounds.

Fair enough. I am still stunned every time I listen to Another Side and Bringing, but we'll keep it at that. Personal taste and all.

That said, very few albums can compare to Pet Sounds IMO. And that's including any Dylan record. I voted Pet Sounds, one of the greatest recorded achievements ever. Awe-inspiring masterpiece is awe-inspiring.
Then get Google Chrome.

Also, it's really not THAT surprising that these two were released on the same day. There have been a few other days like this in history, most notably September 24, 1991.

Fuck.. I just listened to Blonde on Blonde (thanks to everyone who recommended grooveshark) and absolutely loved it. It's tough, but I still think Pet Sounds takes it by just a bit. There's just a brilliance to Pet Sounds that difficult to go up against.

It's definitely underrated then.

I dunno, those I listed are my favourites as of right now.
