For my go-to albums,
Parachutes by Coldplay (sue me)
Whatever And Ever Amen by Ben Folds Five

Jeff Buckley (More of his covers like 'Just Like a Woman')
Radiohead ('Thinking About You' / 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' / 'High And Dry' / 'Fake Plastic Trees')
The Smiths ('The Boy With The Thorn in His Side' / 'I Know It's Over' / 'Cemetry Gates' / 'Asleep' / etc.)
Coldplay (Honestly any fucking song will do. Even their B-sides like 'Idiot' or 'Animals')
David Bowie
Glen Hansard

And I've got a mellow playlist that I've accumulated a lot of sad or mellow songs of over the years.
To name a few songs:
'Candyman' by Grateful Dead / 'Girl' by T. Rex / 'Skyway' by The Replacements / 'Colour My World' by Chicago
'Baby Blue' by The 13th Floor Elevators

Link

BUT for happy music I'll basically listen to The Smiths or whatever else.

I typically listen to sad music. Mostly because it's hard for me to enjoy happy music when I'm sad. Also because it makes me feel better to know other people have felt the same emotions I have. I've spent an unreasonable amount of my life feeling sad, so this music is very important to me.

An old favourite song of mine from when I was a hopeless romantic was Billy Joel's "And So It Goes." The line "And every time I've held a rose/It seems I only felt the thorns" always hit me. Weezer's "Only In Dreams" fits the same emotions, though if you want an album I'd go for Pinkerton, which is full of heartbreak and catchy pop melodies.

When my brother passed away there were only two songs I listened to during the five days between his sudden and untimely death and his funeral: my favourite song, Franz Schubert's "Ellens dritter Gesang," commonly known as "the Ave Maria," as performed by Barbara Bonney, and Tegan and Sara's "I Can't Take It."

If I ever listen to happy music, it's something from the underrated power pop band Ludo. The Flaming Lips also have some songs like "Waiting For a Superman" and "Do You Realize??" that present a positive outlook to sadness.

As for albums, a favourite is Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid. "One Day Like This" is the most uplifting song I can think of, and followed by the heartfelt "Friends of Ours," it's near-perfect. Daydream Nation is great for a particular type of sad where I just want to leave everyone behind me.

Radiohead's discography is great as well, especially songs like "How to Disappear Completely," "No Surprises," and "Fake Plastic Trees."

One of the interesting things about sadness is that it can help you see music on a completely new, more personal level. Recently certain emotional troubles have doubled my love for The Unicorns' "Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?" The semi-psychotic way in which it can jump from sounding happy to angry has been perfect for me. Blur's "No Distance Left to Run" has also been important to me lately.

I know I'm trying to cram a lot in, but the last thing is that there are two songs which I identify with so well it's as if they were written for me. I've been told that it's depressing that they are these two in particular, but oh well. They are Wilco's "Ashes of American Flags" and the Beach Boys' "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times."

my sentiments exactly! though hospice has higher highs and lower lows, this album just straight up connects to my soul.. hospice is really sad and beautiful, but i don't feel as protective over it as this album

When I'm sad I tend to listen to sad stuff, for exemple the perfect album when I'm down is Tonight's The Night by Neil Young or even Carol King's Tapestry.

But Sgt Peppers or Is This It work to cheer me up.

I rarely listen to upbeat music when i'm down. I like to listen to things sad or even angry. Eels, Antlers, Manics, The Cure or earlier Eminem are some of the stuff I stick on.

Threads like these are interesting to me, because as far as I'm aware, what I choose to listen to rarely reflects my mood. Whether I'm happy or sad doesn't seem to influence whether I listen to happy or sad music. The only exception I can think of is when I'm drunk and want to get some adrenaline flowing, I'll often turn to big, dumb rock music. So in that way it's hard for me to recommend an album for you. But in general, if people are unhappy, it means they are thinking a lot about things that are sad or things that cause the sadness, potentially worsening the mood. So therefore an emptying in the mind would be in order, which makes me want to recommend Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver.

This, totally. Listen to music whose mood it opposite to the one you're currently into is aboslutely awful. When I'm happy, I listen to happy music. When I'm sad, I listen to sad music. Both make me happier.
