The first time I heard Forever Changes and Daydream Nation were playing Halo, and I'll never be able to dissociate them from that.

I usually listen '13' by Blur while taking a shower, so when I listen '13' in other place, I can imagine my bathroom 🤣

Celebration Rock - Nechells (first listen)/ Derwent Water and Friars Crag (when it defined my 2012)
Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys - One Stop Shopping Centre Perry Barr Carpark covered in snow.
The Dreaming - Furnace End Carboot. Lots of trees and foliage.
Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables - 6th Form Centre. Plying through my enourmous school bag.
In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull - Dosing about the HMV in The Pavillions that got closed down last year.
National Treasures – The Complete Singles - The place I met Nicky Wire.
Plastic Surgery Disasters - Aldridge and the Morrisons with the long slope. Listened to it again all the way into town on the 997.
Demon Days - Asda at the Queslett. There was no upstairs at the time. I might of listened to this one when I was at home actually... 🤔 Still... first album I got so memory has kept event.
The Kick Inside - The Fort Shopping Centre carpark. Left in car and listened to whole thing!
Great Expectations - Portinscale
Poetry Of The Deed - On the bus. I have to be out and about with this one now.

I also listened to quite a few albums in my art class over summer (which I hated). Now I kind of have an aversion to those albums that I heard at that time.

It's one of the wonders of music how mere sounds can take you to the past. It can remind of places like where I heard it on my headphones, or it can be reminding of what I was doing at the time like what video game I was playing. Sometimes they are reminding of people I've met. Sometimes they are reminding of what seems more purely emotional, like how I was feeling the first time I listened to it, whether it's because the music was making me feel that way or something else.

but also...

Anything by Swans brings me back to that point in time when my ex was cheating on me with a guy who was playing collaborative shows with occasional Swans member Jarboe. I'm not sure if the association makes Swans music work more or less for me, considering Swans music is so dark and aggressive.

I've got all sorts of associations - albums, songs, videos etc... with places, events, feelings, and people. My list would be extensive, and involve many old friends and ex-girlfriends.

...and cars. I associate music with cars I've owned.

Yup.

A few stick out, but a big one is The Glow Pt. 2. First time I heard that was when I was lying in a grass field staring at a bright blue sky. 😄 (headphones).

Another one is Kid A. I literally sat there and stared at my stereo waiting for something interesting to happen and not understanding the hype 🤣 But, I love it now 😄

I heard Daydream Nation first lying in my bed at night, didn't really get into it immediately but it fascinated me enough that I went back to it a month later and it immediately hit me in a new amazing way. I can recall how I first heard most music pretty accurately, actually.

Is This It - The Strokes, brand new CD player, 10 years old playing Dragon Ball Budokai 2 ! God, It was the best time, got so much excited by this album while kickin' some ass on Dragon Ball video game.

Holy Diver and Master of Puppets - I always think of listening to them early on with my cousin and my uncle when we'd go to work with my uncle.

Light... Camera... Revolution! - I always think about my high school. Suicidal Tendencies are from Venice and I went to Venice High School so they are pretty popular there.

Hmm.. I'm not sure if any other albums I think of a place for. I'm usually just in my room with headphones listening to music.

Definitely. They say sound and smell are the two senses most strongly associated with memory, and I can certainly believe it. I don't really have many specific examples, but I get a really strong sense of nostalgia from listening to a lot of Queen songs (most notably "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy").

Do you tend to associate albums with where you were listening to it for the first time? I was listening to "Daydream Nation" by Sonic Youth for the first time while my family was traveling to Palm Springs during summer so when I hear "Teenage Riot" I think of feeling hot, sweaty, and annoyed by my brothers.
