GOD! People have very high self-esteem. It isn't even writing. It's just some paragraphs. I'm sure he was always nodding off in writing classes.

Yeah, that is one of the best examples of bad writing I've seen in a good while.

That said, rap (or hip-hop for those that are into picking on terminology, even though it's not quite the same thing but sure) is for the most part not all that interesting, and Radiohead ARE boring.

Like a few others have mentioned rap isnt really by preferred genre, and there is only a handful of it I have enjoyed, but this guy's article is so poorly constructed that it reads like an internet parody. Let's say you just hate rap and only like rock, to read his article you would think that the rise of hip hop has made rock extinct, except for that last noble dinosaur pink of course. The pink obsession is what makes me almost lean towards it being a giant troll festival and not a legitimate opinion, that is just such an odd stance, blind hip hop hating, sure that happens, but claiming Pink is the last shred of decent modern music? That's bizarre and hardly a believable opinion.

This is one of the least-insightful, most ignorant and narrow-minded diatribes of a genre I've ever read. He's OBVIOUSLY stuck in the past of a long-gone baby boomer - based musical culture, considering he basically dismisses an entire generation of music, just because it's subsequent to the advent of hip-hop. Not only that, but it's reeking with upper-class white male snottiness and prejudice against all non- upper-class white males. None of his favorite icons are other than whites, even though all of rock and hip-hop is rooted in Afro musical tradition.

He also doesn't even analyze hip-hop. Admittedly, not my favorite genre, but to discard an entire genre without substantiating your claims or even invoking a single hip-hop song or hip-hop artist as example is very weak critical writing / argumentation. A standard 11th grade AP English Language student could write a better Persuasion paper on this topic.

It's weird when people seem to think so highly of themselves for saying modern music sucks. To me they seem small minded. They lack awareness. They are talking about something they clearly know so little about.

BTW, I only skimmed through it. Personally, I dislike the music industry, but modern music has been the most compelling of all time periods for me. More good music is available as more music is shared.

Also, I'm confused at what "rap music" is. I thought it's called "hip hop". "Rap music" sounds to me like "sing music". Rapping is the vocal part, right?

One more thing, I don't understand singling out hip hop of all things, as if modern music sucking is the fault of a single genre. And I also don't understand comparing hip hop to "air-guitaring" (noticed that line). Oh, now that I'm reading that again to make sure I wasn't imagining things, it doesn't make sense to me to compare rapping to vocal melody. It's like comparing drums to pianos.

Ahh fuck it, moving on...

My favorite part of this is that he keeps mentioning Pink as though she's the only good thing left in popular music. The last remaining thread left in the lineage of great music. Someone needs to get this guy a Tribe Called Quest record.

However, he over-generalises to the point of total redundancy (this passage in particular had me WTF-ing: "Rap chatter-boxes managed to side-step contests like The Voice and American/Australian Idol, to gatecrash the charts with the phenomenon of some fast talking. Once they signed a recording contract they produced at will a deafening, staccato speech about vomit, violence, blood, sex and dark depression"). He has no clue what he's talking about, yet somehow he knows he doesn't like it. The man is a clown. Sadly, his opinion is shared by a lot of people. A lot of scared people.
