Ive never really tried to force myself to like any music, dont see much of a point to doing that really. There is more than enough music out there that I simply enjoy without willing myself into it to occupy my music listening time that I dont really see much appeal to grinding out listens.

I think you can in fact 'force' yourself to like music,but not in a sense of hearing it so often you like it,but getting a better understanding of it and appreciating it more with your new found understanding,through forcing yourself to listen to it.That's probably not what you were getting at in the op,outlaw,however it's the only way I believe you can 'force' yourself to like music.

That is valid. You can't flick a switch and go into something with completely zero intruding thoughts. The topic to begin with seemed to be about encouraging people to go into an album with more posistive thoughts. Raised the question of whether you could get a favorite by drilling it into you. Repeated listens. Removing what notions were possible to remove. Perhaps... even deciding on liking something beforehand! 😲 The last one is a little out there though. I'm not confident with the idea.

uh no. There's a lot of music out there that is genuinely unlikable. Have you had a look at Iluvpornmusic's chart at all?

Stuff like listening to an album on repeat for much of the day, clearing your mind before going in, thinking of reasons to like it etc.

As long as the enjoyment is genuine, I believe it can be done in some cases. There is hardly any music out there which can be called "unlikeable". What are peoples thoughts on what I have to say?

EDIT: Oh, I just saw your edit. Yeah, in all seriousness, though, I guess there is probably music I wouldn't even enjoy drunk (though I legitimately can't come up with anything off the top of my head). For me personally, though, I sort of feel like being drunk just makes me forget all standards of comparison, and I sort of just enjoy everything equally. That may just be me, though.

It doesn't mean KFC is good, but it means it's not as bad as something you wouldn't eat even drunk, and somehow it clicks with you on certain occasions.

when I listen to instrumental albums I usually try not to do other things to focus on only music, but I never thought that I forced me to like something that unlikable, I only do it for enjoy the things more which are likable 😄

The "unlikable" came from yourself. I'm largly forgiving to most music.

"Post Rock" is a label which is thrown around. I'm mostly indifferent to the term so I can't give a concrete opinion. Much of what I have heard which has been labelled "Post Rock" has been less than inspiring. As I said, I'm indifferent to the term.

Let me rephrase that. I'm willing to give anything a chance, but there are some albums I'm convinced I'll never like no matter how hard I try. It's not that I'm not giving them a chance or not opening my mind to them or whatever, it's just that there are some albums I genuinely can't see myself liking.

For example, I've tried damn hard to enjoy The Joshua Tree. Damn hard. And if anything, I've only learned to hate it more as a consequence.

I agree with what you're saying, though. I've tried to really give everything as much of a chance as I possibly can, even if I'm thoroughly convinced I won't enjoy it going in.

Have you ever read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell? The book talks a lot about the conditioning of the brain and subconscious prejudices. I think you'd find it incredibly interesting.

I will have to see what is to be read on the subject. 😄 I'm testing new ideas and it may help out. I do largely agree with what has been said.
