Starting with The Velvet Underground, he was already fully realized as a poet of the metropolis and inventor of a new language of music that was perhaps founded in Dylan's visionary "sermons" but had a much greater musical sense of hyperrealism. Reed's stories became abject nightmares seduced by a gradual majesty that were both a collapse towards death and an ascension towards the metaphysical. There is a surging, imposing space, arising within evocations of German Expressionism, oppressive sounds and tone deaf noise, that made the messages so traumatic and prescient. Reed and The Velvet Underground injected into Rock music a far greater sense of emotional and conceptual realization, where each instrument and vocal contributes to a complete viewing of its theme and/or scene, a complete immersion into its emotional state, that was no longer limited by the rules of popular music. Their creativity and emotional and conceptual depth has influenced decades of music since, but has yet to be surpassed or replicated so successfully.

While his coolness might not actually be a side effect of the heroin, nor does doing heroin make you cool, I would say there is a certain romanticism towards artists with histories of drug use. I mean look at Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, or Jimi Hendrix. They certainly weren't cool for doing drugs, but I definitely think there's a certain mysticism surrounding people with that type of lifestyle. Lou Reed was bangin' that stuff in the early 60s and was still making music until a few years ago. I mean he wrote songs about heroin in the 60s, and I don't mean he just metaphorically sung about it. He was as explicit as you could be (as we all know). You look at all the rock icons that are idolized after having died from overdoses and then look at Lou. He basically explored all the things most people were too afraid to even talk about in his day (drugs, transgender relationships, etc.) and still remained his true self to the day he died. Besides having lived through a lot of shit (which can definitely be cool from a historical standpoint), I just see him as having been really genuine, openminded dude, which I think makes him pretty damn cool.

In those early Velvets recordings, his vocal delivery sounds effortless and his attitude cool, detached and cynical. Lou was a punk in the 60s before it became fashionable to be one a decade later. Lou represented the flip side of the optimism exemplified by the hippie counter culture casting a more penetrating and cynical eye on society. Nobody did swagger better than Lou apart from maybe Dylan.

By the 70's he celebrated excess and decadence and turned it into an art form. In the 80s he produced one of the decades landmark albums, New York, an erudite and polemical attack on a city that has inspired him like no other. As with most of his work, it sounds out of time but nevertheless in hindsight remains more relevant as anything produced at that time.

Lou Reeds status as an icon is unquestionable.

Anyway, Lou Reed is pretty damn cool for numerous reasons, pretty much most things he has done have 'oozed' cool, (Except 'Lulu' with Metallica).
