The Presets are typical dance music but one of the better ones Australia has produced.

The Panics and Augie March are somewhat countrified but that is the traditional Australian sound I think. The Go-Betweens had more success in the 80s and recently, the lead singer passed away. A key band in the Australian post-punk scene with The Church and Birthday Party.

Josh Pyke is great; his lyrics and songwriting is great and I highly recommend his EP Feeding The Wolves. If I could add EPs, that would be in there.

Kate Miller-Heidke won the International Songwriting Contest with the song 'Caught In The Crowd' and her voice is classically trained; just amazing.

I don't know if my selections have more edge. Sarah Blasko is an indie pop singer who has recently recored her new album in Sweden. Beautiful music and her debut album is my number 1 because it is one I always go back to and can never get sick of.

Something For Kate, Birds Of Tokyo, Dallas Crane and The Cops are Australian pub rock, each sounding distinctively different from the next. All great live as well.

Midnight Juggernauts are more dance-orientated, taking a leaf from ELO and others.

The Living End is one of the best rock bands in the country. Classified as rockabilly sometimes but with a bit of blues and punk influences.

The Whitlams are piano rock with brilliant songwriting and craftmanship.

And Faker are indie rock with a lead singer having a good attempt at trying to sound like Robert Smith.

I put number 11 (Gotye) there as the album is amazing and Gotye (it's one guy) recorded most of it in his bedroom by himself. A mixture of every genre in that album.

Well, that cuts it down. I best get to christmas celebrations. Family here in half an hour!

I had the good fortune of travelling around your fine country back in 1993 for three months.
Last year, I used Triple J radio station as a resource to find current Aussie music. I was already familiar with Crowded House, Powderfinger and other hall-of-fame geriatric Australian rockers:D On Triple J, I listened to lots of stuff which I quickly dismissed like Sia, Cut Copy and Presets. To cut to the chase, Triple J steered me towards softer music and I ended up liking:

You should start out with Kill the Moonlight and Series of Sneaks, then move onto Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and Girls Can Tell if you like the previous two.

I Like everything from The Mars Volta (including Octahedron) except Bedlam in Goliath which I can't stand.

I think it would be interesting to get an Aussie's perspective on music from Australia etcetera ..... Stretch a little beyond your borders if you you need to but try to keep it regional.
