Wow I disagree with EVERYTHING. There's not a single case when I think it's true. Oh well, I guess it's an interesting topic then.

For me, the obvious ones are A Night At The Opera by Queen with Bohemian Rhapsody, Foxtrot by Genesis with Supper's Ready, In The Wake Of Poseidon by King Crimson with the title track, Lola by the Kinks with the title track or Space Oddity by David Bowie with the title track and Cygnet Committee.

Actually I can't think about anything more at the moment.

You beat me to it by several pages. There are several cases in the following pages as well where it appears to be more a matter of "the-song-i-like-best" rather than what the title of this thread is asking (such as Sweet Child of Mine).

Songs that masterpiece albums could not do without are extremely rare. The reason they are masterpiece albums is that they are of excellent quality from start to end. I can't think of a single one, although Bohemian Rhapsody would have been of that stature had it been a masterpiece album.

The album would only be about 20 minutes without it haha. Yeah, that title track is great.

🤣

I don't want to disparage the other tracks though, they're perfect too......but that song is like everything that makes John Fahey brilliant stuffed into one long epic.

Oh I should have thought of this. There might be a good one for most kraftwerk albums...at the least I'd also say Europe Endless on Trans Europe Express and Radioactivity on Radio-Activity.

I think Strawberry Jam is a very good album and its culmination comes on Fireworks, and without it, it would lose much of its force.
Yet, I feel that after Fireworks, the album gets a little weaker (but still good), but that's just me, maybe I need to listen to it a little more

If we are speaking of a "climax", musically, that would be on the screaming outro to to For Reverend Green, then Fireworks being the steady drop in tone on the album, into #1, where the album is at its lowest point, tonewise.

Personally, I find Peacebone to be the weakest on the album, it just has less to offer in repeated listens, or at least less than the other songs, and compared to the dense, abstract lyrics on the other songs, it feels a bit transparent.

Oddly enough, I think I'd pick a different song from every one of these albums.

Care to share any of the choices?

MrFrogger wrote:

I actually don't think any of those albums have a particular song that define their greatness

Again I love all those albums, but I suppose for me those are easy picks for the "greatest" song on each album, and are songs that are a microcosm of the factors making each album great.
