SLTS is a straightforward pop rock song, not really an epic. Suppers Ready is an essential prog epic.

From my own experience, I'd say that metal and prog rock kicks the shit out of any other genres when it comes to epics:

Metallica - Orion, The Call of Ktulu, Master of Puppets, To Live is To Die
Iron Maiden - Alexander the Great, Rime of the Ancient Mariner (THE epic, I don't see how anything else can beat this song at its own game), Hallowed Be Thy Name
Yes - Close to the Edge, Heart of the Sunrise, The Gates of Delirium
Genesis - almost anything off of Selling England...

Other genres have their epic moments, but in prog rock and metal they are found everywhere, it's ridiculous. I guess this is depending on the definition, though.

if I were to define what 'epic' means in terms of the structure of a rock song, or songs of any of rock's derivative forms, I'd be inclined to say that, in general, the creative direction of the music should be driven by the lyricism. That lyrical content usually revolves around some sort of plotline, most notably one of definitive experiences, such as journeys or life stories. Or abstract descriptions of an experience.

I feel that the exceptional length of these pieces is just a result of these constraints, or a common indicator that a piece is an 'epic', and not a constraint itself.

That being said, I'd say that, although 3 or 4 people have already said it already, it bears repeating -- "Kashmir" is one of the best examples.

Also, they are often subdivided into movements, like how "Bohemian Rhapsody" is partitioned. That song is also an important element in the set I'd consider "epics", simply based on the definition above.

I would associate "epic" with a more progressive band, and definitely one with a heavier and rockier sound. Different parts of the song are not necessary, but usually help. Usually a solo of some kind is necessary.

The best description of "epic" would be 2112 by Rush. Others would include: One by Metallica, Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson, Light My Fire/The End by the Doors, Kashmir by Led Zeppelin and, my personal favourite song, Citizen Erased by Muse.

I think the problem here is that OP hasn't defined what he/she means with "epic". What you're referring to sounds like the more literal definition (don't know much about what is it myself, but according to wikipedia it's briefly a lengthy narrative poem). That, or you're referring to the actual quality of the song? Either way, I think the definition here is often lengthy songs with a grandiosity to it, in which case "Fear of the Dark" fits that definition well (it's one of my biggest favourites by Iron Maiden, so that's should be quality control enough too).
