I got used to listen to FLAC audio files... sometimes I convert them back to Wav.

Mainly, i listen to music in my studio's monitors/headphones. My favorite setup is through my Focusrite interface with Sennheiser HD650 headphones... you can hear everything, sweetly.

A huge chunk of my listening happens at work. This means using the computer (Google Music, because it isn't blocked) and earbuds. This isn't great for really hearing the music, so I mostly listen to albums I am already familiar with. For new albums, which deserve a proper listen, I listen either on the home stereo or through my good headphones. Either way, I listen to whole albums. And I do read lyrics, but usually not right away. I like to hear the song a few times before I start dissecting the lyrical content.

I just took a long pause from the De la Soul debut, and I find that I'm really enjoying the album again. I guess pauses during a hip-hop album really help me since this isn't the first time.

Yes, everything is done of a laptop connected to a home theater.

Cartesius wrote:

What format are your songs? MP3 VBR? 320 kbps? FLAC?

Anything, usually 320kbps mp3s and FLAC. I have stored and categorized all music in an external 1TB drive.

Cartesius wrote:

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers?

Speakers mostly.

Cartesius wrote:

2.0, 2.1, 5.1?

Stereo.

Cartesius wrote:

Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

Reference monitors.

Cartesius wrote:

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

Sometimes, off the internet as the song plays.

Cartesius wrote:

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Mp3 - computer. I don't often pay attention to the level of audio quality. Sometimes I like things lo-fi anyway. I do want to start a vinyl collection one day filled with only albums that have stuck with me for at least an entire year. A collection that purely represents me.

Cartesius wrote:

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

Always speakers. Headphones are a pain to wear after a while, although sometimes I go on walks while listening to music - the headphones do bother me but whatamIgunnado. I never listen to music in public places, though.

Cartesius wrote:

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

I rarely read lyrics. About half the albums I listen to are instrumental (Jazz, Classical, Ambient, Noise, etc.). Among the other half, I don't understand the language I'm hearing about 90% of the time. I prefer not understanding the lyrics. I am easily bothered by lyrics.

Cartesius wrote:

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

Whole or partial album. Only a song by itself on occasion.

Cartesius wrote:

Finally... where do you hear it?
I use all formats, it depends on the album! Most of the time, I'm using mp3 or CD, but sometimes I'm in a vinyl mood.

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

I have AKG headphones, so I use those, car speakers, and my laptop's speakers.

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

Depends on the album. Usually this is a no.

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

I may pause to get up and do something for a few minutes, but I usually listen straight through.

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Everywhere. I listen to music in my bedroom non-stop, the car, school, when I'm shopping, etc.
I tend to get CDs, rip them onto my computer and then put them on my iPod. Mostly listen to whole albums at college when I'm doing work with really terrible, cheap earphones (someday I'll investing in a decent pair). And as for the lyric I don't tend to listen to them on that much on the first listen unless that's the main focus of the album.

Cartesius wrote:

I'm really curious, what's your setup? Do you use the computer as a source? What format are your songs? MP3 VBR? 320 kbps? FLAC?

Usually I'm hearing it from my laptop, mp3 320kbps for the most part but sometimes its less and I don't notice the difference. There was some Franz Ferdinand album I had that I didn't like and a little while back I noticed it was REALLY low kbps and that can ruin the music. Sometimes FLAC too.

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

I'm usually on a headphone, I used to hear it on my 2.1 speakers, but it broke because of some electric equipment we have in our house. It's a good system but I never seen to have the time or will to take it to repair.

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

Usually no. But I really can't understand some words in english when there are all those instruments playin, so when listening to some Smiths or Joy Division album I always try to read the lyrics because when I discovered those upbeat tunes were about sad things it was really funny and I felt bad hehehe.

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

Whole album. The problem is that a lot of times I have to leave before the duration of all the songs and that makes me lose some great tunes on the end of the records.

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Bedroom. But listening it while driving is just great.

I couldn't find a topic on this... and I don't want to know how people on HIFIFORUM ou HEADFORUM listen to music, I want to know how the BEA users listen to it! Is it OK to start this thread on Music?

Usually MP3, highest quality possible, depending on source. I record all my CDs on high-quality VBR. Stuff from Amazon comes at 320kbps (or is it 256?). Some stuff from emusic is mid-to-high quality VBR. If i ever come across FLAC, i convert it.

Quote:

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

I usually listen to high-quality 80s-style headphones at work. At home my speaker system's (for my iMac) pretty good. I also have a smart phone dock speaker which is just ok. I can give details about headphones (which come with a lifetime warranty) and pc speaker system if you're interested..

Quote:

I used to always read the lyrics that came with cassettes (what are those?) and CDs (huh?), but i rarely buy physical product anymore. Sometimes when i'm curious, i'll look up lyrics online via 365lyrics or metrolyrics or one of those.

Quote:

I usually give albums at least 2 full listens to determine how much like them (but sometimes all i need is 1). I'd say 60% of the time i'm listening to whole albums (without a pause like james dean!) and about 40% i'm shuffling through some gigantic, convoluted playlist.

Quote:

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Most of my weekly music listening is at work at my desk. Next would be in the car to-and-from work and other destinations. Next would be on my computer or that portable speaker in the house or outside. Last would be in the bedroom to help me sleep.

Quote:

I listen to music on my computer or iPod classic, also sometimes Spotify. I try to have my favourite albums in FLAC, other than that it doesn't matter if it sounds good (mainly higher than 192)

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

I use Beats Tour in-ear headphones because anything bigger than that (I hate on-ear headphones or any kind of headsets) makes my ears and head feel very hot (I have a very high body temperature normally so I hate hot weather too). I also switch to computer speakers when my ears start to hurt.

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

Maybe not on the first listen but I always try to read lyrics for albums that intrigue me because I'm not a native English-speaker so there are many words I don't hear so I have to see the lyrics.

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

If I want to listen to an album to get acquainted with it I don't skip, and normally I try to listen to albums but I listen to single favourite tracks as well esp. after I think I know all the tracks off the album quite well.

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Anywhere. But I particularly like going for a walk to listen to music. It just makes you feel you're in a movie or sth.

Most days I'm stuck at work and stream directly from Spotify through a set of high end Sennheiser headphones. At home I have a turntable, so I love to spin vinyl there.

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?
Headphones most of the time. I love having the sound inside my head, and to cut out the noise of the outside world.

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

I used to with every cd I got, but in the digital age I'm doing it less an less. But at the same time, my ear is trained better to pick up on the words.
The ipod is my main source, 320 kpps mpr, or 192 or 128 its doesnt make much difference if you are listening to it in a car.

I usually use some Bose noise cancelling headphones when Im travelling, or just normal headphones for my normal days

I never read the lyrics on the first listen, but I eventually always do I first need to kind of like the music, then after the 3rd or 4th listen I listen to the album with lyrics. Because to make a perfect album, you need the lyrics.

Always whole albums... you cant appreciate the album if you dont do it this way I think. But with friends or just chillin', pause and skip are always in use.

I usually listen to album in the car, one album in my way in, one album in my way back. Or in my room, just laying in my bed and listening to the album is one of my favorite things to do!
I'll listen to music on either my computer or my iPod Classic. I try my best to get 320kbps MP3s, but I don't mind if it's much lower - that said I refuse to listen to anything below 192kbps. If I have FLAC files I'll just convert them down, they're much to big and iTunes doesn't play them, so it's just easier to know my entire collection is MP3.

Quote:

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

I've got some hand-me-down speakers from my Dad, who's a bit of an audiophile, so they're pretty good if a little old. It's just a simple two small speakers and sub-woofer. For my iPod I have a cheap pair of Creative in-earphones. Picked them up for about £7, honestly I can't hear much audio difference between them and a quality pair unless the music gets very loud and then the treble distorts - but I listen to pretty chill music.
When you're on the go in-earphones are the way to go, headphones are too big and other earphones leak way to much and don't stay in your ear, plus you get the entire immersive experience, especially when the bass resonates against your skull.

Quote:

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

I don't pay too much attention to the lyrics unless they grab my attention, then I'll look them up. However if it's a favourite album of mine I will really enjoy sitting down and reading the lyrics - an album feels more intimate if you know the words.

Quote:

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

I'm not too harsh on myself. I won't pause it if I don't have to, but I'll happily pause an album if needs. I rarely ever hear an album from start to finish entirely without any pauses whilst on my PC - I don't think pauses take away from the experience at all.

Quote:

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Mostly in my bedroom whilst I'm on my computer. If I don't feel like cycling to school I'll do the 30 minute commute, which each way almost exactly adds up to an hour, making it perfect for hearing an entire album as I'm walking - really enjoy that, it just takes time.

Great questions 😁
CDs, or mp3 (320 if available, in some cases of rarer, older albums the copy isn't that good but I'll listen anyway because I'm curious), or streaming (Deezer, Grooveshark, Spotify).

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

The hi-fi (well, calling it that is a bit of a stretch, seeing the state of the thing :D) for CDs, and plain computer speakers for mp3, simple earphones at night when the TV is on.

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?
a) Rarely. b) Often, yes.
Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

No pause if I can.

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

In the living room when I'm home, I use an mp3 player for commuting. Not everyday though, there are times when I'd rather read, or just watch other commuters.
Typically computer, I use iTunes. I know it's not the best program, but it catalogues music nicely and it's easy for playlists and stuff. Most of my music is from CDs, so AAC or MP3 format, typically between 192 and 320 kbps (though that's sometimes more of an indicator of a song's encoding rather than quality). FLAC is nice, but the nature of my speakers and headphones (and maybe ears haha) make it so that the difference in quality between FLAC and mp3/AAC is barely recognizable, and not worth the extra bytes FLAC takes up on my computer.

Cartesius wrote:

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

Usually hi-fi headphones (I don't know that I've ever heard anyone call them earphones actually; read it a few times, never heard it spoken). Sometimes my ears or head hurts though, so I'll just switch to the computer speaker (which sucks). And sometimes car speaker, which is surround and actually really good, but the quality is usually compromised by the sounds of the highway.

Cartesius wrote:

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

If the lyrics are available while I'm listening, then yes. If I'm driving, then no 🤣 (I would hope no one does that). If I buy a physical copy of the CD and it has lyrics in the liner notes, then I'll usually read the lyrics. This is especially true for music where I know the lyrics are important (The Wall, MBDTF, and Trouble Will Find Me for example). I often don't pay attention to the lyrics though. I really should listen more.

Cartesius wrote:

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

Whole album typically, though sometimes it's hard to stay in one place for an whole hour, so I need to pause. Usually I'll listen to isolated songs after the first listen of an album, though sometimes songs come first.

Cartesius wrote:

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Anywhere. Bedroom, kitchen, living room, roof, car, the woods, library, etc. My favorite places are the bedroom and the car though. In my bedroom there's no distractions, so I can listen in peace. And in the car, I'm just performing a mindless task that lets me focus a lot on the music. You'd think the woods are distraction free...they're not. I only tried that once since I thought it would be the most peaceful listening experience. Instead of peaceful I got lots of bug bites.

I'm really curious, what's your setup? Do you use the computer as a source? What format are your songs? MP3 VBR? 320 kbps? FLAC?

I usually go for the 320 kbps mp3, but if I can't get that I don't stress.

Hi-Fi Earphones or Speakers? 2.0, 2.1, 5.1? Multimedia speakers or Reference monitors?

I usually use my SR-60i headphones to listen to music, otherwise I use this garbage mini speaker my iPod plugs into (shower).

Do you read the lyrics on the first listen? Do you ever read the lyrics?

No. Yes.

Do you usually listen to the whole album without a pause? Or isolated songs?

The former. If I'm feeling lazy, I'll pick the best songs to listen to, but that's very rare.

Finally... where do you hear it? At the living room? Car? Bedroom?

Usually in my bedroom. Other times in the car or other rooms of the house.

I have many different "modes" of listening. The usual thing is to listen to albums on my car. If I'm driving to uni, the ride is about 45 minutes and I can listen to one LP on the way there and another on the way back. Another way I listen to music is in my room, where I have a couple of Altec Lansing speakers which sound pretty good, I'll use my external sound card if I'm feeling fancy. The last way is to go into my home studio and use the speakers there. They aren't so much quality, but the volume capacity is enormous, and the room's acoustics are excellent. I use a couple of skullcandy headphones I got at a fair whenever I'm at the library or sth.

I always get either v0 or 320kbps, anything less sucks, anything more I won't tell the difference (yet). Also, I try not to skip songs and to listen to the album as a whole, unless I'm doing playlists in which case I skip away.
