Okay, JMan, I know you're trying to help, but what you're saying doesn't make any sense. First of all, I'm swedenman, not Outlaw. Secondly, I've already said what his reason for asking me to take his shift was. I don't think he's the type to lie about that, but even if he is, the only way I could find out would be by stalking him, which would be way more effort than going to work, anyway.

Yeah, I'd say this pretty much. It depends whether you'd expect him to do the same for you if you were in his situation. If he's the type of guy who'd go out of his way to help you out in a situation like this then I'd feel guilty for not being willing to do the same for him, but if he's the type of guy who definitely wouldn't help you out in this sort of situation then there's no need to feel guilty saying no. Really depends who's asking.

Oh, and if this guy's a friend then I don't think it's cool to do something for him just because you think it means he'll owe you one in the future and you don't deserve to feel good about yourself for doing it if that's your only motivation 🤣 I kid but it's true.

In JMan's defense, I would say that the reason behind the missed shift may be valid. Look at who is asking - a nice guy who has run into trouble with his car is different than someone who routinely misses shifts or flakes out.

I'd also say that there's more to this than your own needs. Is this co-worker a nice guy? Would you be getting him out of a jam? You could be unselfish and help him out. Further, you could help out your employer and your colleagues that would be short-shifted. It's something to consider. You don't want to be the doormat that covers for others and is taken advantage of, but if it's a genuine need and a unique occurrence, it makes the situation different.

As far as I see it, I understand your dilemma. Sorry - it's a toss-up.

Bahaha, no. I scrape food off plates and stack them for the dishwasher. It's miserable. Could be a lot worse, though, and I make pretty decent money with it.

I would only do it if I know it will benefit me in the future. If you a) dont care about the extra cash or b) dont think that taking his shift will mean he will "owe you one" in the future (could be taking a shift of yours in the future or pie or something) then fuck that dont do it.

NOTE: this could be slightly different if this was a job in which you are hoping to make a career out of (im assuming its not) in which case doing these "nice" kinds of things could become more beneficial at a later time.

Sounds like you're a (gasp!) good person.

But nonetheless, you're under no obligation to cover for said co-worker. Just don't be disappointed if he treats you the same way later on.
If you still feel bad later, I'd apologize and tell him all about your internal struggle with this. He might appreciate to hear it.

All it can damage is that co-workers trust, so its how you value that co-worker. I'd respectfully tell him that you aren't available to do that shift due to a prior engagement (to yourself of course) that you can't squeeze out of to help him out - this might lessen the blow? iunno, never been in this position.
