I listen to Gary Glitter all the time and don't even feel bad.

Seriously though I don't think it's possible to completely separate the music from the people who create it, at least not for me. If an artist I liked came out with this sort of thing I'd probably be less inclined to listen to them and would most likely not be able to enjoy their music as much as I did before.

...although describing Anthrax as acid rock is fairly strange.

These studies are all pretty famous and point to the same conclusion. Unless of course it's misleading because they somehow put all the aggressive and distracted mice in the same group that happened to be the same group that listened to Anthrax.

I might've cared more if they did a few more genres, you know, just to diversify the testing a bit, would've made it more interesting. It's attention grabbing though tbh.

Weird most of the metalheads (admittedly not many) i know are super nice. Definitely nicer than those Vampire Weekend fan assholes.

I will say though that I generally dont get a violent vibe from black metal. I can easily sleep to Burzum and if i was feeling angry before it would probably calm me down. Death metal keeps me awake but i can study to Immolation without ripping paper and breaking pencils.

Yeah, there's definitley things to consider. Like the fact that the music was blasted for 10 hours a day (although this did seem to work in the classical music group's favour) and the fact that the results would differ slightly for humans.

I thought the most interesting this was that they were the only group that attacked (and killed as I read in other reports of the study) each other. You only have to look at the examples you gave above to see that it can (not neccecarily 'will') incite mindless violence.

Also I think this is why every metalhead I meet is an arrogant douche, it's an aggressive behaviour. Although I'm talking about people who spend 95-99% of their music listening - listening to metal. Moderation is the key, kids.

These studies are all pretty famous and point to the same conclusion. Unless of course it's misleading because they somehow put all the aggressive and distracted mice in the same group that happened to be the same group that listened to Anthrax.

hahaha. I find that study a bit baffling. When I was at one of my old jobs, we'd always crank up Slayer on deadline days and I definitely seemed to work more quickly.

But maybe the mice were simply too busy rocking out to Anthrax to be bothered with a shitty maze

This reminds me of a study I saw recently where it said that people that listen to metal have depression and anxiety issues at higher rates than people that don't listen to metal, but that study is just so misleading. Metal isn't the cause of this, it just attracts people with those issues at a higher rate. At least that was the case for me.

Yeah, I'm definitely not saying metal = violence or anything like that. I've been a bit of devil's advocate for sake of positive discussion. And I agree, it attracts people with those issues at a higher rate, and offers a place to release that rage. I'm sure the suicide rate of people listening to Elliot Smith is higher than other forms of music too, because people suffering from manic depression relate to it.

Side note: I'll never forgive the drunk asshole who jumped off the 2nd floor balcony and landed on the kid in front of me, paralyzing him permanently.

Also, once saw an asshole lift up another kid and drop him directly on his head while System of a Down was playing. Not sure if that kid survived without serious injury

I don't disagree with this. But I do think it's influential, especially on developing minds, kids, teenagers. The glamorization of materialism in commercial rap has clearly been quite influential. Just as I believe homophobia in various media has slowed progression on that front. Murder and rape are obvious more extreme acts caused by a multitude of factors.
That's the opposite of a solution. These things definitely have subliminal effects on the subconscious mind. If you've ever watched a violent movie, and then had a violent dream, that's very clear evidence. Obviously, this doesn't mean you'll go out and kill. And to a certain extent, a violent video game or music can be a therapeutic release for built up aggression. I have never listened to anything that has made think of actually raping babies or practicing genocide so I think im doing ok.

ps this is also why music does not cause people to do terrible things. if you start a mass murder because you think a song said it was cool then hey youre really stupid and proabably couldve been prompted by a super soaker commercial to do the same thing.

Agreed about the art thing.

And for the PS part: seeing as music often comes from the soul (or whatever) and advertising is an attempt to make people do/buy something, well yeah I agree with this.

I agree with you that music does not cause people to do terrible things, but it does influence them. Some music glorifies violence, misogyny, or spews racism, etc. I think there's definitely a need for moral responsibility within arts, video games, movies, etc. I'm definitely not saying censorship. There's a very fine line.

OK so i know everyone wants my opinion on this so woo here we go.

No an artist's personality or criminal record doesnt play a factor in me liking or buying their music. I listen to a lot of black metal and i imagine that i would not be listening to most of them if i restricted myself like that. Burn as many churches as you want if you make good tunes ill listen to it. (NOTE: i do not condone burning churches or other buildings).

Where i might draw the line is if (for example) a singer/songwriter made a song that had over the top blunt lyrics about rape or something. eg "I rape children la la la la la". But id probably just attribute that to poor songwriting, and having lyrics like "im eating chips la la la la la" could be equally as bad to me. Lyrics generally dont mean that much to me, but really god awful lyrics can ruin songs. And this goes back to black metal. Despite the fact that i listen to tons of it, some I still have no idea what the fuck theyre singing (shrieking) about. Usually in that case i just make up my own themes about the music. Oh this has a forest on the cover? must be about forests. Boom. That album is about forests. It could be about white supremacy but what do i know. I dont speak norwegian shriek and i dont care anyways. Most of the black metal albums i own dont even have lyrics in the sleeves so i can just assume theyre talking about winter or death or whatever the hell i want. Thats the great thing about art. You can make up your own themes based on the feelings you get from it. I have never listened to anything that has made think of actually raping babies or practicing genocide so I think im doing ok.

ps this is also why music does not cause people to do terrible things. if you start a mass murder because you think a song said it was cool then hey youre really stupid and proabably couldve been prompted by a super soaker commercial to do the same thing.

meccalecca wrote:

Since I've got this topic going, might as well raise a few interesting questions...

Can you like the music of someone who disgusts you as a human being?

Probably, though this hasn't been the case yet (no musician I've ever heard disgusts me). Maybe I should listen to Charles Manson's music...

meccalecca wrote:

Would you buy the music of a convicted murderer?

Phil Spector, so yes.

meccalecca wrote:

Are there artists whose music you can no longer enjoy because of their personality or actions?

I guess not.

meccalecca wrote:

Does violent music provide insight into the mind of the performer, or is it just music and nothing more?

Probably, though most likely I'd think nothing of it when listening to it, unless it was especially grotesque/violent/offensive (e.g. "I Cum Blood" by Cannibal Corpse), in which case I'd probably just not listen to it. I suppose if an artist had recordings of murder or rape or something during the song I'd probably be pretty weirded out.
