I can't picture Bono without The Edge by his side, now less than ever. And Liam Gallagher on his own... Yeah, that would be a disaster. But I do think that Kurt Cobain could have had a good solo career.

As for solo artists that wouldn't do well in a band... Well, Bowie is the best example I can think of. If we talk about 21st century performers, I don't think M.I.A. could work as a member of a band either.

At this stage in his career, Bono. Maybe when he was younger, but at this point he's just a caricature of his former self.

Also, Michael Stipe. I don't know why, but I can't picture a solo record by him being anything to get excited about.

Chris Cornell based off of Scream. I couldn't last through 10 minutes of that bullshit.

Mike Patton somewhat fit before Mondo Cane. (I say somewhat because Fantomas and Peeping Tom technically aren't "solo" but they are basically his projects).

The Doors' music relied way too much on every member's compositional and musical skills to enable him to make music of the same quality alone. There would have been the voice, but The Doors were just that, they wouldn't be near as great as they are.

I would've loved to see the reviews for a Jim Morrison spoken word album with no backing music.

                          Steven Stills

He was a major frontman in Buffalo Springfield (wrote and sang "For What It's Worth") and was the biggest creative mind behind Crosby, Stills, and Nash's first album.

He's got good songwriting and is an amazing guitar player, but his solo work was never extraordinary.

Ringo Starr.. I dont even know what he was thinking when he went solo.. still dont know what is he thinking now.

John Fogerty, he has some decent stuff solo, but nothing compared to Creedence Clearwater Revival success, those were truly golden years.

Chris Martin... although he makes must of the work for colplay, Will Champion is pretty good himself.

While I agree, any solo albums he does would probably have at least some instrumentation. I think he could get a similar effect while also conveying different feelings or styles.

I jokingly said I want him to be in a band with Paul Banks, Tom Smith, and Harry McVeigh, but seriously, that would be incredible. I just love voices like that, those untrained baritones.

                          Julian Casablancas, obviously.

Billie Joe Armstrong is hardly the musician that either Tré or Mike are. He'd have the songwriting chops, but not the means of carrying out his vision.

Thurston Moore? Has he done any solo stuff? I can't imagine him, or even Kim Gordon (whose album dropped, though I've not heard) doing anything terribly impressive by themselves.

Also, I think that Paul Westerberg was much better suited with The Replacements than anything he did afterwards.

Robert Smith comes to mind as someone who hasn't done much outside of his main project, but nearly everything of The Cure revolves completely around him anyway. At any rate, I can't imagine him doing anything memorable or good.

I think Echo should have released a solo album. Unplugged, preferably.

Back on topic, though. I think Bobby Gillespie would be pish solo. I also think Amelia Fletcher (Talulah Gosh/Heavenly/Marine Research et al) belongs in front of a bunch of nameless guitarists with anoraks and could only ever be in a band.

This is of course by mentioning a 'frontWOman' I'm not straying off topic. I daren't start off another thread for fear of reprisals.
