Films to watch are Apocalypse Now, the last half of 2001 A Space Odyssey, and Hellraiser 😈
Edit - I forgot to mention Amorphous Androgynous 2 CD 'A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind Vol 1 - Cosmic Space Music' which is a compilation of tripped out classics, one for the hippies

The KLF - Chill Out along these lines too. Superb.

It hardly leaves the populace armed with the knowledge to make an informed calculation of risk, and subsequent decision to take something or not when you're government lumps it all together and calls it satan's gravy.

A curious thing though, recently the UK government opened that can of worms again by asking an 'independent' scientific body to re-evaluate drug calssification, and when they did not come back with the answer they hoped for, they sacked them and cast them all as loons. Among other things, the body said that a simple A-Z classification system was completely obtuse, as has been pointed out in this discussion.
But with the weed a couple of years back they downgraded it while at the same time created tighter restrictions on tobacco use in public... so it was less of an offence in law to use canabis than it was, but more of an offence if I rolled it in tobacco, a legal drug, and smoked it in a public place, hmmm.
What message dopeople take from that?

How can people who claim never to have inhaled make sensible policy on drugs?
"have a hot dog sir, but don't eat the sausage!"- "so I am in fact eating BREAD, and not the hot dog, as was clearly my intention when I set out to procure a hot dog!- "yes sir, and if you could write a report on the paricular relative tastiness of hot dogs to bread afterward, and have it on my desk by Monday that would be super"
If a politician came on telly and said " man, twenty years ago I ws constantly fucked out of my head on every substance both natural and synthetic known to man, and was highly immersed in the accompanying culture as to be to all intents and purposes positively encyclopedic on the matter" -That's the chap I want to make the policy. (obviously, if he's still doing it it's a different thing all together... and assuming he's survuved the experience in tact mentally.
Also, I have a question about the perenial argument that canabis leads to harder drugs. How mauch of this is due to the fact that it is simply because they are available at the same places as weed? My impression is that mostly people only come across the hard stuff because your dealer says, oh by the way, I've got this if you're interested. This is the only way I've come across it, and unless I set out to get those particular things in the first place, I never have encountered them. Basically they seem to ride mostly on the back of canabis appeal, and are available through the same outlets like when you go to the shop to buy a can of soup say, but you emerge with tons of other stuff you'd not have bought ahd you not seen them.

It would be interesting to see the effect on hard drug use if you removed their proximity to weed through legal status.

The "gateway" theory is a bit of a delusion, or at least problematic logic. People who use hard drugs are likely to begin their drug careers by smoking weed, sure, but the logical fallacy arrives when you make the conclusion that they used harder drugs as a result of weed. As someone who has gone through a few "gateways" myself, it was never because weed wasn't powerful enough anymore, it was just that I began to get curious of other chemicals. Cannabis is no more of a gateway drug than any other mind altering substance in the world.

Oh I agree, mainly because the culture is different... by which I mean usually it involves going with friends to meet new people, sit around in agreeable and likeminded company in peoples houses, with all amenities at your disposal, a comfy and secure environment suited to your tastes, and discussion and conversation (if deteriorating over time! 😁 ) is the order of the day. Very civilised I think.

But I do think skunk has been over bred and become a different drug almost, which has not really been reflected in the attitude of authorities to this development.

I am with you in that club. I hadn't smoked anything since about 1990. Prior to that I smoked recreationally for 20 years, heavily from 1969 to 76. A few months ago my girlfriend and I smoked a pathetically skinny little joint mixed with tobacco (following the cautious advice of a young friend). We are supposed to have the best weed in the world in my backyard so I had to try some. No exaggeration, my joints used to be pure and at least six to eight times bigger and thicker. The very first thing I noticed was that the stuff stunk like skunk and was really harsh. Two or three tokes and I was at my comfortable place. By the end of the little spliff my heart was racing and I was thinking that it must have been laced with something. I realized that I was probably just suffering a little anxiety. Anyway, I got through it but didn't enjoy the experience. End of story.
The Horror.... the Horror! 😁

Of course there are truly wonderful experiences to be had, and indeed I've had a few myself, but it is a double edged sword, and for every John lennon, there is a Syd Barrett, and you just can't tell which you may be until you found out... and then of course, it's too late ( not that I'm equating the talent possessed by these particular individuals to the rest of us, but rather the mental caste).

many people I know who've taken it do so just for purely recreational purposes (fun), and coming to it as such, have a wonderful time. Others of a more introspective and introverted nature, or come to it for more high minded or pretentious reasons (guilty as charged!) may struggle, and often the people I've known who were more intelligent than me struggled more precisely because of their intelligence or sensitivity to their selves, which is somewhat counter-intuitive.

Aldous Huxley's famous Doors of perception, and Heaven and Hell are good reads on the subject.

Regarding the strength of drugs... I had a skunk joint a couple of years back after maybe ten years without having anything, and holy shit it nearly put me in a coma it was so strong! Not the mellow highs I remember. This particular drug has become more akin to an hallucanogen than the weed of old in strength- in fact I'd go so far as to say it's a different animal altogether. Though you wouldn't kniow it by the same lame public debate and identical drug policy towards canabis governments still pedal. It's time we had a grown up debate on the subject, and policies and law to match...taking all the good with the bad.

Lastly (you'll be relieved to hear!) The End by the Doors is actually the most terrifying thing I heard on LSD, and perversely, this is why it was so damn good!

Anyone who wants to enjoy some good music for tripping to, I would suggest Primal Scream's Screamadelica, The Orb's U.F.Orb, Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion, The Future Sound of London's Environments I, and Orbital II.

A lot of musicians and avid listeners experiment quite liberally with drugs in conjunction with the act of listening to music- nothing wrong with that- i think its appropriate for the lounge for chrissake. Just don't be careless when using drugs. I've found acid especially interesting when listening (performing on it is a bit extreme I've found). "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", most Animal Collective, Hendrix, Beach Boys, anything drippy is usually an amazing experience. Its like...dude....I...can....SEE.... the notes, brah! 🤣

I wouldn't say everyone should try it, especially if you are excessively nervous by nature, or have a lot of turmoil in your subconscious. But come on... "Russian roulette?" hahah ok Mom. Its no more like Russian roulette than eating fast food everyday, or driving your car on the highway to work, or starting a WoW account. Just don't take more than two hits your first time.

I love how people who have never taken drugs think they know the first thing about them. I've never been to Mexico city, but I saw on the History channel that there is this crazy Latin gang that kills people...and they are from Mexico City so no one should. ever. go. there. If you went there and survived, yay for you, but seriously, you should listen to me and never go there.....

Most recreational drugs are no more addicting than coffee (which, technically is a recreational drug i suppose). I can empathize with people who might have loved ones that have fallen to substance abuse, but i mean, its not that different from any sort of lifestyle excess.

Thank you! I felt alone on this subject! It's dangerous, I heard, if you already have the likelyhood of getting a mental illness, but otherwise just don't abuse it. Oh, and there's the fact what you brought up...being concocted using poisons, and other harmful substances.

I sadly haven't tried any of those bands except Pink Floyd, since I've only done it three times, but The Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall were pretty great. My friend (who's music taste sucks ass,) put on Pantera and for one, I didn't want it on and two, he put on a really depressing song. So there went that trip! I also had a lot going on in my life which had it's toll on my trip too.

Album cover's from the 60s are pretty crazy too! Like Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Odyssey and Oracle. I now know why psychedelic art is made! And don't get me started on tie dye shirts under a blacklight...

It's not just a matter of whether you've been to Mexico City but when were you there. LSD in the late 60s and early 70s (which is my frame of reference) was very strong and inexpensive. Half a microdot was enough to blow you away with hallucinations for 12 to 15 hours at a cost of 50 cents to a dollar. Virgins only did a quarter. My understanding is that since the 80s LSD has been feeble in comparison and not necessarily hallucinogenic.

I've heard all about the supposed purification or degradation of certain drugs, I'm sure most of it is true. Weed has gotten waaay better in recent years 😎 but acid has certainly become more of a fringe drug therefore its quality is sporadic. There are so many methods of making it, some of them better than others. Like all drugs, you should get it from someone you trust. You can still get wonderful acid though, trust me.
Yeah, that's about the size of it.

My own personal side effects did not include the much lauded flashbacks, in the sense that I was not suddenly back in a full hallucinatory state, but rather a panic could set in, or an uncertainty or anxiety take hold... it's hard to account for, but I KNEW, and FELT it was present for such a long time after, and that these effects were because of the new tricks I'd taught my mind, to adopt a well worn cliche, like the scene in the wizard of oz, I'd seen behind the curtain to an extent, where all my fragilities were exposed and made explicit to me...and you can't un-know what you have come to know through it's use.

...One small point while I remember it- There is one direct Physical effect of LSD that I remember that was thouroughly unpleasant: ERGOT POISONING. This is a fungus or mould in the acid you get sometimes, which may bear reading up on for it's full dangers, but I remember it being like someone sticking a spear through my guts.
Actually after doing it only three times, I felt no need to do it. I don't see how it could be so dangerously addictive if it has no addictive properties besides it existing. I'd say only after prolonged usage could it possibly become addictive.

And you'd be wrong. Just as drugs behave differently, people also have different reactions to drugs and differing levels of susceptibility. Some people do drugs for years, then quit cold turkey one day and never look back. Others do them for years and don't think they're addicted but are. Others try them once and don't like them and never try them again. And then there's the ones that try them once or twice and are hooked for the rest of their sadly shortened lives.

Thing is, you usually don't know which type you are until you try - which makes taking drugs kind of like a game of Russian roulette. Bully for you if you spin the chamber and hear the empty click. Too bad for the other guy whose last experience in life was hearing a bang. Personally I value life a little more than that, and so anytime I see someone celebrating drug use I make sure to remind people of the dark side. Wasted lives, wasted potential, and just plain waste. Why is crime associated with drugs? Is it because drugs are illegal? No, it's because the drug addicts blow all their money on the drugs, and since they're addicts and are constantly jonzing for their next fix they start committing crimes to get the money to get it.

If you took drugs and had no ill effects, yay for you, hope you had fun. If you took them and now wish you could turn back time because they've ruined your life...well, too bad. You should have listened to someone like me and not to someone like Mr. Mikeyskywalker here. I don't need to jump off a bridge to realize I could die when I land. I'll take someone's word for it, and just because someone told me they did it and lived, I'll let him enjoy that experience and have no desire to repeat it.

EDIT: I should have read the thread - pretty much everything I said was already stated by others.

Interesting post, very passionate. One thing I'll say is I don't agree with the blanket statement you make about crime and drug addiction. A big reason people use drugs, whether alcohol or cocaine or whathaveyou, is because it makes it easier to cope with life. Not to get too philosophical about it, but I'd say there's bigger problems in society and in people's personal lives that lead to serious drug problems and that these are more respsonsible for crime than drug abuse. Also, drug use itself isn't necessarily a problem, even if their using hard drugs. Just about everybody uses one drug or another. Superiority, prejudice, entitlement, sterotyping, dishonesty, greed...these probalbly cause as much if not more problems than dope.
