I;m gonna listen to both of these today, along with "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence." I honestly don't know what to expect from either album.

So, over the last couple decades, U2 has gone on the be symbolic of the over the top, anthemic rock turd. But those early years were great. I personally prefer The Unforgettable Fire and War over Boy, but it's a solid if not incredible debut. But Boy doesn't even come close to comparing to Unknown Pleasures. Boy contains flashes of greatness. Unknown Pleasures is greatness embodied. Some users can't relate to the way Joy Division perfectly captured manic depression in recorded form, but it's there. Anyone who's ever been to the darker places of psychosis should be able to relate. Unknown Pleasures is a jarring experience that was unlike anything before it. Like Elliot Smith later on, Ian Curtis gave a voice to the tragic passenger, hanging on in a world not made for them.

Anyway, if you found the album monotonous, I guess that's your opinion, but I'm not sure where you could be coming from when you have the upbeat but solemn sound of "Disorder", the creepy atonal sound of "Candidate", the crunchy ass groove of "She's Lost Control", and the dark and spacey sound of "I Remember Nothing" all on one disc. If anything, the album is extremely dark and heavy throughout, but the tone varies substantially throughout.

Interestingly, I find I like it a little less with each listen. I loved it the first time I heard it, and still do, but it's become one of my less favorite tracks on the album.

Unknown pleasures is boring and bad. Errm, I actually like U2 so I voted Boy, actually a really good album, but War is their best.

Oh boy...

Obviously Boy doesn't have much chance in this one, even I would feel bad if Unknown Pleasures lost in the first round. But let's take a little bit of time to appreciate it. This is not the U2 of later days when Bono became conceited enough to think he can save the world, this is not the polished anthemic sound of their later efforts. This is an album that is brimming with youthful energy, that has more songs about growing up than anything else, with a sound that manages to merge the aesthetics of post punk and alt rock, with still somewhat "poppy" hooks and choruses. These are songs written by band members at their late teens, and you know what... It's all the better for it. Even if you don't like U2, take the time to give this a listen. You might be surprised.

Let's appreciate that there was a time when Bono wrote a song like this

Unknown pleasures is pretty good no doubt. "She's Lost Control" is brilliant.

However I haven't heard U2's debut yet and I do not have any hate for U2, they're quite a good band and they were absolutely a great band no doubt. So ill give "Boy" a listen.

OK, so Boy is great. Don't get me wrong, in the way of "things that aren't on my chart", Boy is probably #1. It's a great album.

But you have to look at what Boy is. Boy is U2's attempt to fill in the hole that Joy Division left behind. Bono has stated that his goal was to be the best band in the world other than Joy Division, because he knew he couldn't get there.

So while Lillywhite's production has always been incredible, and U2's music has usually been great, this is just not a hard decision.

If you still don't believe me, just remember that Boy's best song is about missing Ian Curtis.
