Faust is more cohesive and feels like a whole journey in just over half an hour. I enjoy Faust IV but they mostly just dick around for the majority of the second side and it just isn't as satisfying an experience. Not that they don't dick around on Faust too but there's more of a sense of purpose there. The debut just strikes a balance between randomness and flow in a way that Faust IV and maybe even So Far come close to, but they never quite get there. I also like Tapes but for a different reason.

Well dang, this is tough. I think I'm leaning towards Violent Femmes, but I'd be happy to see either progress to the next level.

Jennifer is an awesome track but not even Faust IV is as great an album as the debut.

I really like VF, this is the best album I've heard of there's (I've not extensively dug into their stuff, though). Not a faust fan. This one wasn't too hard for me, but I'm surprised to see it SO DARN CLOSE.

I'll gladly throw a vote down Violent Femmes' way. While I don't think it's amazing, it makes for a fun listen throughout. Faust on the other hand has some interesting moments but too much bullshit to work for me. They got better later on

I suppose to some people Faust could just sound like drugged up germans fucking around with stupid sounds. Thats not entirely false, but the way it takes modern-classical sound manipulation (say stockhausen) gives it a creepy dark atmosphere, and then smatters it on top of stupid shit (like the obnoxious marching band in Why Don't you eat carrots) somehow adds up to something rather haunting and memorable. The ending of Missfortune is probably the best example. It sounds genuinely "mysterious".

I think what Faust did was in an odd way anticipate that esoteric avant-industrial sort of music that Throbbing Gristle, Nurse With Wound, Coil and others would later play with, albeit with a less blatantly "occultish" sort of image.

So yeah I voted Faust, its a favourite.

Tough call. Violent Femmes was on my short list of albums that I was going to get to soon, anyway. The acoustic guitar on that album is amazing, musically it's very interesting. The vocals are kind of pitchy, which is a strike against it. On the other hand, I love the album cover, that little girl with the dirty feet.

I didn't know what to make of Faust. It's like the Beatles' Revolution No. 9 and nothing else that I've ever heard. Like R9, all those strange noises are coming together to form a musical landscape. You have to pay attention, and like R9, I expect I'd hear new things every time I listen to it. R9 is the only song in the Beatles catalog that I'm still discovering, because there's so much there. Why am I describing an unrelated album by talking about a Beatles song? Because I don't know what else to do with it.

Vote to Faust.

Wow. what a matchup. Youthful emotion vs groundbreaking creativity. Where's HairyMarx when you need to hear Scaruffi's defense of Faust. I'm torn. Faust's influence is far more important to me, but Violent Femmes was a really important record in my development as a teenager.
