I like this thread. Very nice ppnw.

I need to revisit At The Drive In and Sparta and Mars Volta and check out other projects. I really adored Frances the mute when it came out in '05. And I loved Relationship of Command in like 2002. I think "One Armed Scissor" is one of the greatest rock singles ever. I made that my jam so hard when I was in junior high. And Wiretap scars I remember really liking but somehow I was expanding my musical tastes so much so fast at that time I never really took the time to get really into it.

But yeah when I heard "Frances the mute" I had thought i'd found my generations "Great Rock Band". They didn't live up to that childish hope, but still they were badass.

one of the most energetic live bands of all time.

when i first heard Relationship of Command it blew my mind. Something about the production of that album has hurt it over time. It was treated like a nü metal album and produced overly loud and cold, but damn if those songs aren't extraordinary. sadly Mars Volta and Sparta both went downhill after promising debuts. I did like Mars Volta's latest release though. And when I saw them live back in 2003, Cedric still moved like James Brown playing with the MC5.

                          Omar is incredible.

I've always loved just about every thing The Mars Volta has done, they're my favorite band of his. ATDI is a close second.

I thought the Bosnian Rainbows album from this year was pretty good, nothing incredible, but it's always cool hearing an artist expand his horizons, though I'm not sure how much further Omar's horizons can expand.

I'd put Rites of Spring under post-hardcore and emo, some of Karate's stuff too, maybe June of 44. Post-hardcore and emo are like peas and carrots. FUGAZI and Refused don't really wallow in emotions or sadness or anything, so I wouldn't throw them under the label of emo. I feel that post-hardcore is a genre based on sound, while emo is a genre based on lyrical content, so sometimes they cross paths and sometimes they don't

ATDI one of the few last few bands with the post-hardcore tag that's actually good after that youve got your funeral for a friend and other "mallcore" bands.

One thing that bothers me about the genre is what makes a band like At the drive-in post-hardcore/emo yet fugazi and refused are simply just post/hardcore. If it were the other way round Could rites of spring be considered post hardcore too instead of just being emo?

I love At The Drive-In, Relationship Of Comand is currently in my top 100, 'Arc Arsenal' and 'Invalid Letter Department' being favourite tracks, I enjoy most of The Mars Volta's stuff aswell, I've yet to give proper listens to the bands beyond that though so I guess it's something I should get around to soon.

At the Drive-In was an incredibly influential and likeable post-hardcore/emo band. So what are your favorite At the Drive-In songs and albums? And what are your favorite songs and albums from At the Drive-In spinoffs like Sparta and The Mars Volta (there are more than I could count on two hands). This thread serves as a general thread for those groups (e.g. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez had an album this year under Bosnian Rainbows). They're a ridiculously creative group, Jim Ward, Omar De Zavala, and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Omar is also one of the best rising guitarists in the Rolling Stone crew. Relationship of Command also had enough demand to deserve a special release this past record store day...

My top 5 favorite albums I've heard would be something like:
Sparta - Wiretap Scars
At the Drive-In - Acrobatic Tenement
Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute

all close... they're that good
