I think it would be best to start simple and ask for movies you think would appeal to me. I may have seen less than 50 films in my entire life and most would have been me as a child being may to watch what was on TV or cinema.

So what movies would I like? 😄

Some Godard maybe. Like A bout de souffle (Breathless) or Une femme est une femme (A Woman Is a Woman). But I'm not an expert here, so I'll let someone else do the recs...

edit: Ooh, or maybe Luis Bunuel. Again I don't know many of his films, but having seen The Phantom of Liberty, I'd say it's about what you're looking for.

Trout Mask Replica is absurd, random, genuine, and original.
So are these movies

Monty Python & The Holy Grail
Brazil
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Even The Dwarfs Started Small
Evil Dead
Dr Strangelove
Brand Upon the Brain! A Remembrance in 12 Chapters
Adaptation
Being John Malkovich

Thanks for these, I have already watched Un Chien Andalou and Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie by Bunuel though that was long ago. From mecca's list, I've watched Dr Strangelove, Being John Malkovich and some of Brazil (which looked awesome, need to finish that film).
Hahaha, ok, iaf I mostly wrote this just to troll the fuck on the last page for being a wanker but he never responded so boo him. I really don't have any beef with silent film, I love a lot of silent film and a lot of what I said was said for the sake of Jimmy Rustling - but I do think that movies of the period had trouble "seeing beyond the proscenium arch" so to speak, even Méliès (though I think he made up for it with his lavish artisan-ship and whimsy).

Like, (and I know this is down-right sacrilege to many) I think a lot of black and white movies would be much better with colour (It's A Wonderful Life comes to mind right away as a movie that is beginning for a bright colour palette but finds itself subdued in dull grays), and the only real exceptions to this rule are movies which utilized this limitation as part of their stylism (the film noir and French new wave movements being particularly good examples).

Interested in further reading on the theorists you mentioned though if you could link/suggest me some,

Hadn't seen it. Months later, I still can't take it in though.

There are some great ones, don't get me wrong - Nosferatu, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, Metropolis, the entire filmography of Georges Méliès -

I like Méliès, but considering what you say after this, it's totally ironic. Involuntarily so, but still. More later.
but as a whole period silent films come from a time before film was really understood as a medium

Stupidest thing I've ever read about this subject. By 1917 all the camera moves had been established, and cinema as a medium had already been theorised expansively by 1928 (Eisenstein, Delluc, Moussinac, Vertov).

Jackwc wrote:

and as such are just incredibly poorly executed.

Period silent movies suck. Objectively. Bam, take it in.

There are some great ones, don't get me wrong - Nosferatu, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, Metropolis, the entire filmography of Georges Méliès - but as a whole period silent films come from a time before film was really understood as a medium and as such are just incredibly poorly executed.

Now, if you were talking about modern silent films - films like Return To Babylon, Brand Upon The Brain!, or The Unusual Inventions of Henry Cavendish - I might be able to get behind you because, hey, these films are greatly overlooked, but what you are more likely doing is doing what every 15 year old on YouTube is doing and trying to flaunt your antiquated tastes because you believe liking old things grants you some sort of maturity or class. It doesn't.

This man is wise.

If you need suggestions on where to start, my all time favorite movie is Metropolis (1927). Also don't miss City Lights (1931) or Sherlock Jr (1924).

In the spirit of Halloween, here are some oft overlooked horror rec's:

Audition - Slow, chilling, unsettling to the core; probably the scariest movie I've ever seen.
Hellbenders - A movie about demon-hunting priests who have to sin as much as possible in order to enter hell and kill them. Just check this trailer, such a baller: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig3UC0oFfWw
Martin - George A. Romero's best movie isn't about zombies, it's about vampires.
Monster Brawl - A weirdo indie film that answers the great unanswered question "what if the UFC was filled with classic movie monsters?
The Stuff - An alien snack food comes to Earth and melts everyone who eats it.
Thirst - Modern Korean horror classic about a Catholic priest who becomes a vampire.
Trollhunter - Blair Witch Project if instead of hunting down a witch they were hunting giant man-eating trolls.

Dunno yet. This week I'll be seeing Ender's Game and then Wadjda. I'll decide later whether they were worth it.

Depends what you want, guv.
