The Space Oddity error may be due to the circumstances around it's release. It was first released under two other names in 1969, David Bowie in the UK, Man of Words/Man of Music in the US. In both cases it was Bowie's second effort. Then came The Man Who Sold the World in 1970 and Hunky Dory in 1971, before it was actually releases AS Space Oddity in 1972.

So Space Oddity, it could be argued, is Bowies FOURTH album. But of course it should be argued that it's his second.

I have to make another correction. Zen Arcade was Husker Du's third album after Everything Falls Apart, which I think was out of print for a while. Space Oddity was David Bowie's third album after my favorite, Hunky Dory, and also I argue against your perceived greatness of Space Oddity as an album. Lust for Life is actually Iggy's debut as a solo artist. His second album is The Idiot.
I need to make a correction on your facts, especially if you're going to make an argument.

David Bowie - 1967
Space Oddity - 1969
Man Who Sold the World - 1970
Hunky Dory - 1971

Wait wait, so Space Oddity is his third? I guess if you move backwards through time. Good day.
So what I've learned from this discussion is that the sophomore slump isn't a huge problem for bands / artists with staying power, that is, the kinds of bands / artists we celebrate on this site. But the MTV-type artists who are signed to cash in on the latest trend often fall victim to this and quickly become has beens as they weren't cut out for greatness to begin with. Now great bands / artists do fall prey to the sophomore slump, but the drop in quality usually isn't as huge as it is with the flavor of the month bands who will soon be forgotten or in the category of "whatever happened to...?"

I don't see it at all, personally. Examples why:

Gorillaz - Demon Days
Muse - Origin of Symmetry
Radiohead - The Bends
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow

All of these I found to be much stronger than their debuts.

if you count EPs, then yes Zen Arcade was the Husker's third, but i was thinking only LPs. Space Oddity (1969) was, infact Bowie's second, after David Bowie (1967). Hunky Dory (1971) was actually his 4th, after The Man Who Sold The World (1970). Iggy Pop's The Idiot came out on March 18th 1977, 6 months before Lust for Life, which came out on September 9th of that same year.
Maybe if they took the best of Use Your Illusion I & II they could have had a better and shorter collection on one CD. II was better than I but neither the equal of Appetite For Destruction.
You have got to be kidding me! That has to be the most infamous (What happened?) sophomore slump albums in history. I wouldn't even call it a slump, more like a career ending album.

Quote:
I think the whole idea is absolute horseradish. Check it out:
A Quick One-The Who
White Light/White Heat-The Velvet Underground

I disagree with you on both of those, especially A Quick One. Aside from the mini rock opera, Disguises, and So Sad About Us, that's one of their weaker albums, certainly inferior to their debut. White Light, White Heat has its moments as chaotic and weird as it is, but it is inferior to & Nico.

4. Bryter Layter- Nick Drake
5. NeverMind- Nirvana (perhaps the most obvious one?)
6. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (most people actually consider his debut inferior to a lot of his great albums)
7. The Bends- Radiohead (proof that some bands are great right off the bat and some take a while to develop)
8. We Have the Facts and We Are Voting Yes- Death Cab for Cutie
9. Aquemini- Outkast
10. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere- Neil Young
11. Being There- Wilco
12. Loveless- My Bloody Valentine (another obvious one)
13. The Low End Theory- A Tribe Called Quest

Apperill: London Calling is The Clash's third album actually. Their second is Give Em' Enough Rope, a good album, but arguably inferior to their debut.

i don't think that this rule is credible. People like the first album of a band because of the "Novelty thing" when they release their first, even if the second album is as good or even better, it will not be as appealing or as extraodinary than the first one ...

here's some few 2nd best album.

Radiohead - The bends
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
M.I.A	- Kala
Pixies - Doolittle
Muse	- Origin of Symmetry
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Beck - Odelay

but to prove your point HyperBully (or someone else) here's something more scientific to do: take any top 100 best album ever (for example the top 100 albums of this site ) and simply see what is the share (%) of the 1st album. of course you will have to take one album per artist (the better ranked) ... so if you have time !!!

Jesus Jones - Doubt (greatly outsold their debut Liquidizer)
Catherine Wheel - Chrome
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish
Stone Roses - Second Coming (I know people will argue with me on this, but it's at least as good and personally I think it's better)
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
Nirvana - Nevermind

I've found that in many cases, this is true. (GNR is a good example.) However, like the "i before e except after c" rule, it also fails occasionally, as there is always an exception. What do you guys think? Give examples of bands you've encountered that have overcome the sophmore jinx.

I wrote a thread like this one a while back 😄 I don't believe it exists personally
