I completely agree about Exile. At some point I know I mentioned that Exile could have its track order rearranged and I wouldn't notice. Actually, same with London Calling. That said, I like both of those albums very much, especially London Calling.

I agree about the fact that Exile isn't a diverse album. About the Doors, I guess it's like another argument about what is post-punk and what isn't, the only important thing is that we both enjoy it 🤔
I don't know if someone was going to make a best varied albums tourney but I'm not sure about it.

Diversity has never really been the reason why I love Forever Changes. I feel that overall, both the mood and the instruments stay pretty constant. It has this kind of mystical and vulnerable atmosphere all the way through, with always that unpredictable acoustic guitar, the quiet violins and occasionally an electric guitar or horns.

The Doors, on the other hand, has songs that range from upbeat with nearly screamed vocals (the first track) to melancholic piano-driven ballads (The Crystal Ship) to long psychedelic organ solos (Light My Fire) to the odd drunken song (Alabama Song) to the epic final track which is pretty unique actually. Their is literally no instrumental diversity, but I feel there is a pretty broad spectrum of moods throughout the record, which is not the case for Forever Changes. Well at least that's how I feel about these albums.

Even if your other examples are definitely more varied, I feel that The Doors stands above many other late 60s records in terms of diversity (from what I've listened to, at least).

I don't think Forever Changes is particularly diverse, but I think it has more variety than The Doors' debut. That said, I got pilloried in a JMan thread for saying Exile on Main St. isn't at all diverse, so perhaps I'm just awful at spotting varied records.

Eh, I don't know.

Aw damnit! Why does this have to happen?! 🧱

Parachutes is one of those albums that I can relax and chill to while still having it's emotional moments that have become a standard theme in Coldplay's music. I love the atmosphere that this album presents and it has some of my favourite songs of the 2000s. Though I may be slightly biased that I have listened to Coldplay more than The Doors.

Now, The Doors' debut, that is another fantastic album. It's one of my favourite album of the 60s, literally nothing comes close to the amount of variety this album had compared to other albums in that era. It is an intricate and iconic piece of composition that stands the test of time. I have it in my top 20 so it may have been an easy choice in hindsight, but a couple tracks don't hold up in quality than I remember them than on first listen.

Both are good in their set of fields; but it's hard to say which one is better. 😐 My instinct would go for Parachutes but my intellectual side goes for The Doors.

Fuck it, I'm going for Parachutes.

I really hate to do this. I like the Doors. As a keyboardist, no one can touch Ray Manczarek, and Morrisons voice is unique in all of pop music.

I once made a mix tape of the Best of the Best Of All Time. Occupying 7 1/2 minutes of that mix tape was Light My Fire. So, I really hate to do this.

I honestly think Parachutes is better, and I can't really explain why. It was beautiful, emotionally stirring, musically interesting, had no bad moments. (Morrison gets uncomfortably personal a couple of times in The Doors).

It was close. Parachutes wouldn't have beaten L.A. Woman, but it does beat the Doors debut.

I feel like I've betrayed my favorite era.

Vote to Coldplay.

So easily Parachutes for me. The Doors have always done very little for me. I find most of their songs cringe worthy in their tackiness, the production leaves much to be desired even of it's time and I find his voice is tedious to listen to.
Parachutes is just quiet lonely beauty.
Parachutes gets my vote.

The Doors has always been one of those albums that never connected. I honestly don't like it very much. Morrison's voice and words just don't do much for me except annoy.

Parachutes is actually a really solid album - catchy as hell, cool, interesting, well paced, and I just think it's probably their best.

The Doors are hands down my favorite band from the 60's.

Coldplay one time made me go "Hey, these guys aren't too bad."
