I love Another Diamond Day, but I feel like Fleet Foxes get a really bad rep in a lot of places. Of course it's always a question of taste and what not, but they do a lot of interesting things in their music. They use unconventional tunings in a really interesting and subtle manner, they integrate baroque instrumentation without feeling too grandiose most of the time, and overall at least have the ability to make a really nice atmosphere. Of course they're part of the indie folk explosion, but I would set them apart from bands like Bon Iver even as something completely different. Anyways, I'm just rambling and I will admit that maybe they have too much attention thrust upon them, but I feel like a lot of people shit on Fleet Foxes more than they would if they just didn't like them for being part of that indie folk scene, and I very legitimately love them.

I like them both, but Vashti encapsulates a time and a place and feeling in the album that though it takes certain rare moods for me to want to listen to it nowadays, it is like stepping into an idyllic soft world that isn't affected by time...Well, unless you listen to Lookaftering, which is like this album's twin. Quite heartbreaking, that album. Don't overlook it.
Just Another Diamond Day is always patiently waiting for me whenever I need soft lullabies of hope and beauty.

Now, let's talk about Fleet Foxes for a moment. They also capture a time and a place and I'm starting to wonder why they're not on my chart. I'm in Asheville right now (love this city so much I don't want to leave) and it definitely has a vibe similar to Fleet Foxes. Vashti is an idyll of rural England (or just rural UK in general), Fleet Foxes is an idyll of rural America, namely the mountainous areas (Blue Ridge Mountains!). They're both lovely places and feelings (well, I've never been in rural England, but like, how could it not be?) and I think it is absolutely beautiful that these two album manage to capture them pretty well. Fleet Foxes has got this whole brotherly love and simpler times vibe, and Vashti has a bit more of an introverted tinge, and also a bit more free spirited I think. Feels far older and perhaps a bit less tainted (well, not tainted, just changed) by modernity. Vashti has got more of the magical nursery rhyme vibe whereas Fleet Foxes has this tender mountain man vibe. Either way, both albums make me feel at peace and at home! That is another theme in both these albums, home. While I'm a bit closer to JADD, Fleet Foxes hate must go. 😎
