What are you? Five? They're not dark at all. You don't understand what dark is really. I'm sorry for you. Best Coast not only isn't dark they even may well be post-industrial.

Gotta mention Big Black, Scratch Acid, The Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk.

That's all some really dark, sadistic music.

I find this album exceptionally creepy. Your mileage may very.

Good point! I wonder if that was the reasoning for this thread, because it never occurred to me.

Thanks for that and even then I'll probably forget. Will work on it, though. And there really are. I mean, there's the peppy dark ("Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" by The Smiths or "Maybe Tomorrow" by Chance Waters), there's sad dark ("I Know It's Over" by The Smiths or "Flume" by Bon Iver), there's angry dark (the stuff I don't know as well), there's evil dark ("Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus or "Frankie Teardrop" by Suicide), and so on. This is a wonderful thread wonderfully timed with Halloween coming up.

Devil Doll are some kind of proggy goth stuff, extremely unique to some shock horrorcore King Gordy stuff about raping children and killing nuns. Tubeway Army's 'Down in the Park' to Peter Gabriel's sad little ballad 'Family Snapshot' about assassinating the president. 'Rippin' Kitten' asks her daddy if she can go out and kill tonight while Thrill Kill Kult asks 'Do You Fear For Your Child'. I don't know what The Residents go on about, but it certainly feels wrong. The more I think about it, the more the topic interests me, I'll give some more suggestions as ideas sink in.

I understand what you are saying, its not happy go lucky music, but I connect the smiths on whole as being more downbeat melancholy than oppressive evil 🤣 . Listen to the stuff I posted or Necharsian posted to see where I'm coming from, even Suicide might be comparatively tame (excluding Frankie Teardrop).

Yeah, I mean, The Smiths aren't Bauhaus or anything, I just think they're still dark. Not evil necessarily, but at least dark.

If you want evil, then Bauhaus, [insert german Einstusadhf;adusofh Nhfadsoufhasdfuohasd band here], Kirin J Callinan, and maybe iceage or Tuxedomoon.

Also I forgot to mention Kirin J Callinan, iceage, and Tuxedomoon before. They're great too.

They certainly have some bleak songs scattered about, I'd say some of the stuff from the Curtain Hits the Cast is the most desolate sounding (Mom sayyyys we ruinned her bodddyyy) and maybe Don't Understand from Secret Name.

My god, thank you for saying it. I wanted to bring them up but I wasn't going to try and spell that.

Also for the person who said The Smiths weren't that dark, it depends greatly on the song. Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, This Charming Man, Heaven Knows I'm miserable Now, they're all poppy. Not bad but too bouncy to be dark, even if lyrically they're sad.

But Asleep? Suffer Little Children? How Soon Is Now? I Know It's Over? That's the stuff dark is built on in my mind. No, they're not Bauhaus or Suicide (the darkest bands my brain can come up with), but they're still dark.

Hm, well for a sort of fairy-tale darkness I'd recommend

What I Want From You Is Sweet by Orion Rigel Dommisse

I Could Live In Hope by Low
But only on some songs. I believe it has a really hopeful and comforting theme to it most of the time, but in the case of songs like "Cut" or "Rope", I think the dark tag would fit it.

Both Coldworld albums, The Stars Are Dead Now and Melancholie.

Irrlicht by Klaus Schulze

Desolation through and through.

Nico as Yourself has mentioned. Lorca by Tim Buckley as someone else mentioned as well.

Glimmer by Jacaszek

Not depressing or disturbing, it just feels really contemplative and brimming with wonder and curiosity, though it still feels dark, in the most literal sense in that it feels like blackness.

Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill by Grouper

Duh. Feels dark and wet like being at the bottom of a well.

Faith by The Cure

And I'd actually say Fever Ray and Bloom by Beach House as well. They have a sort of mechanical, glassy, clean darkness, even if they can convey non-dark emotions, happiness even. I'm interpreting darkness in the more literal way than strictly emotions. Even Treasure by Cocteau Twins or Shrines by Purity Ring could perhaps fall under this definition, though I don't think so.

As you can see, I don't listen to much that is overwhelmingly dark, and yet I really appreciate and love darkness regardless. I just like to see that little glimmer of hope at the end of my darkness. Some spirituality in the void. Some meaning for the chaos, eh? 😄

Anything by Jim Thirlwell has dark elements in it. Wiseblood and Steroid Maximus are two of his side projects to check.

Maybe the darkest thing I have listened to is Isolrubin BK's Crash Injury Trauma. Made from real crash site recordings.

Others (of ambient/industrial/experimental persuasion):
Lustmord
Ah Cama Sotz
SPK
Ain Soph
Coil
Psychic TV
Dead Can Dance

I agree with this guy

I really like the direction this thread went. It started off painfully subtle, but now it has gotten really dark. Nice.
