I found another site that did a similar tournament consisting of 32 teams (years) back in 2011. I won't divulge the results, as it's quite fun and suspenseful to go through each round and see the match-ups unfold. It's full of some stunning upsets and dominating victories.

But I think you guys should do a Poll here as well to see how it compares. I haven't been able to find any other movie tournaments elsewhere on the web, so this could be only the 2nd one!

Allright, well Im going to go ahead and start a thread to hammer out the rules (not just to call dibs 😉 ) and we will take it from there. One key rule is for year verification and is that Im going strictly by what IMDB lists as the release year. Often that's when it was first publicly shown, not always commercialy released, but otherwise we're going to have too many arguments over what's the correct release date if we went by another method, so that's going to be set in stone. So I HIGHLY, HIGHLY SUGGEST you look through each year your favorites were released and make sure that it's a year you're willing to take on as a whole, as you'll likely need at least several movies if you plan to be competitive.

Here's an example of how to look up a year: type in Platoon on IMDB, click on the page, then click on the year and this page should pop up: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?year=1986,1986&title_type=feature&sort=moviemeter,asc. obviously you can filter it anyway you want.

Aww this makes me sad! I wanna participate but I don't know shit about movies compared to what I know about albums, and even that isn't much.

allrighty, great to see interest. Yeah I think Im going to hammer out the rules before we take the next step, but in many ways it will probably be similar to the BYT tournament but on a bit of a more modest scale.

Some Ideas:

- Year verification is the trickiest. Im thinking going by the IMDB date, just because that would be the easiest, though often that goes by whenever it was first shown. Going by the original country of orgin release would also be tricky because some weren't always given a standard commercial release. The best method I might put up to a vote.

- How would the "teams" be presented? Im thinking of either two or three films and then something else being highligted, like a particular performance, cinematography, musical score, screenplay etc. Again that part is open to suggestion.

- Ill wait to see how many films are nominated and then decide if it's going to be a playoff or knockout structure. Playoff sounds like a lot more fun but that would require a lot more investment from each year's captains.

- Again Im thinking if we do it similar to the Best year in music tournament that each captain will have a co-captain, in case I can't get a hold of them when needing the teams to be presented. It will also give each other a good chance to share recs and consider movies that maybe you would've missed otherwise.

Anyways, I think we'll get the rules set in stone before we start nominating. I also want to give people time to look up what year has their most favorite movies (or just a general favorite year overall) before as well before they pick their pony for the tournament

I think we definitely have enough regular movie watchers here to make this work. The problem is coming up with the rules, not just about determining what year a movie was released, but also what do we vote on. I think what we had in the music year tourney with the teams was pretty cool, but we have to be careful there, because it also got really complicated as it went along. But something along those lines - the "captains" chose their teams, different movies for each match. Also, I really liked the group stages that we had there. I'd consider that again. Also, I think it makes more sense if we do this with the teams. And then when we go to the elimination phases, you're allowed to re-use movies again.

I agree about the year thing being tricky. I just always go with USA release date for my personal lists, but that obviously doesn't make sense for something like this. Release date in the film's native country makes the most sense to me.
