I wouldn't hold your breath. If they're receptive to SDR and you're receptive to MCR, that seems like a good place to start. If you consistently retreat from your friends and don't look for ways to bond with them, you'll find yourself being excluded from things. That can make your teenage years extremely tough, to say the least. My musical tastes were pretty different from my friends in high school, but we found a middle ground with some of the pop alt artists of the '90s. We even went to concerts together.

Remember, everything seems worse on the internet because there are no non-verbal cues. People will overreact to you and your first instinct will be to overreact to them. Yeah, the original post was worded in a way that made you sound a little conceited, but don't let anonymous strangers convince you you're an asshole. They don't know you and should really know better than that.

The proper answer is still "leave them alone".

When I was 16 I tried to turn my boyfriend onto "good music" but it just made him resent me because the fact that I was doing this made it clear I was looking down on him for listening to what I felt at the time was "bad music". I should have just let him be.

I've had this experience too, but it's not because I was sharing different music with them, but rather because I was being so dismissive of music that they loved. I don't know the details about how the OP is going about this, but it is worth keeping in mind that they may be very attached to what you view as bad music. I don't think that means you should avoid sharing with them, just be gentle in your approach.

People with different music tastes can share recs in a healthy way. See (most of) the threads in this forum for an example.

Throw some Slint at them. If they don't like it, they're not friends worth having.

Seriously though, try bridging genres... Post-Hardcore or stuff like that. I remember showing Cloud Nothings to a friend with similar tastes to yours and he started listening to more stuff beyond his 3 or 4 emo bands.

EDIT: Wait I just read your post. Whatever, i'm out.

sp4cetiger wrote:

Just keep doing what you're doing. They may dismiss it now, but the mere fact that you made them aware of it is already a good thing. I had the same problem growing up, since my friends were all big on Hootie and the Blowfish and Dave Matthews Band and I was more into alt rock. I made fun of them for it at the time, but it was always respectful and a lot of the stuff they were into then they now admit were just passing fads. As long as you're not a jerk about it, they'll respect you for your different tastes (eventually).

It is important to stay humble, though. You may know more about music than they do (just a guess), but everybody and everything has something to teach us. I still enjoy me some Hootie sometimes.

How are you people still encouraging this unhealthy social behavior? The proper answer is still "leave them alone".

When I was 16 I tried to turn my boyfriend onto "good music" but it just made him resent me because the fact that I was doing this made it clear I was looking down on him for listening to what I felt at the time was "bad music". I should have just let him be.

They haven't released much yet. 3 releases. New album on the way though.
I'd start with their self-titled debut. it's more post-rock than the other stuff. City of Caterpillar fans loved it more too. It's definitely their most beautiful work
