I think this structure sounds good. and I'm kinda digging the whole MVP thing. It allows for specific credit to be given to a particular movie that may otherwise not be perfect as a whole.

So, who wants to sit in as my co-captain. I've got 1977 and 1982. And for each of these years I have a strategic route to victory. PM me if you're interested.

I can't take another, but really, no 2008 yet? Dark Knight, WALL-E, Dr Horrible, Hancock, Iron Man, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, Pineapple Express, Gran Torino, Taken, The Wrestler, Frost/Nixon, and The Hurt Locker. Quite the year. Surprised at that gap.

Oh well. Excited for this to start. My actual point in coming here was to ask if you had a thought on how large the bracket will be yet. Sorry, I got off topic before I even started.

Allright I think this needs an update

Rules

- Again, can't stress this enough, a film's official release date for this tourney is going by whatever IMDB lists as it's official year of release, eg next to Platoon it has (1986), that's it year. Otherwise there would be too much arguing over what's the proper release date. So look up your year on IMDB and make sure that it has all the films you want to use before nominations are closed.

- We are going to be doing a playoff structure, with multiple matchups in the first round, so make sure your year has enough films to be competitive. Im still deciding between two and three film teams, as well as the aforementioned MVP to be tacked on at the end, as two might seem like it's narrowing down your choices too much but 12 films x 40 or so years plus the MVP highlight might be a total overload. That ill leave up to a vote.

- All teams will be pm'd to make each matchup easy to navigate and not have any long waits for the captains to post their teams. When I start asking for teams (which won't be for a bit), you can either send all the teams for each year they're up against, or one at a time before each matchup. For the former, any changes you wanna make during the tournament you have to specify clearly in a pm (what you're swapping in and what you're taking out, etc.). I will be asking for a co game-runner for the two brackets Ill be involved in, while I have someone in mind it's not set in stone so I may ask for a volunteer soon.

- There will likely be eight brackets of five teams, same as the Best Year in Music tournament, so each year should be expected to see at least four matchups in the first round. 16 teams will advance to the next round. How many points are awarded for each match victory or draw and how tie-breakers will be decided is still being decided

- The MVP or whatever it ends up being named as is to highlight something specific from a film, and it can be anything, from a particular performance or ensemble, a screenplay, the work of a crew member, or even just one particular scene, really it can be anything up to the creative mind of the captain. The catch is that it can't be from a film you use as a whole. Whatever film or films it's based off of you can't re-use the rest of the film at least for the particular round.

- All films that can be used have to be it's original release. No re-issues, director's cuts, long awaited foreign releases or posthumous mended cuts. So sorry Blade Runner wouldn't be eligible for 1992, Apocalypse Now Redux for 2001, Touch of Evil for 1998 or Bob le Flambeur for 1982.

- Remember we're voting for the teams, not the year as a whole, in each matchup. We'll get the larger picture once we see more films being presented. Given it's going to be hard to expect each participating voter to have watched every single film put forth, but still it's a team-based tourney so hopefully it will all work (also hopefully people won't be discouraged from using lesser known gems as well)

Just to give an idea of what a matchup may look like here's an example team

1983

Risky Buisness

A Christmas Story

Videodrome (maybe a third)

MVP: Caleb Deschanel- Cinematography- The Right Stuff

obviously you can add a youtube clip or image or link in your post if you choose

Allright so some things are still up in the air but hopefully this gives an idea of how the tournament is going to be structured. Again, come forth with any ideas that you believe could help improve this tournament and they will definitely be considered. Participation is really the key here so I definitely want to see the captains and voters get involved with all aspects of the tournament. I guess, just keep watching the movies!

-I think we should have teams, and I think we should do the group stages. I think the point of these tourneys (besides being fun) is to discover new things, and that won't happen if we just have an ordinary year vs year poll.
-3 per match sounds good. But, if we end up doing group stages, we could allow re-using the movies in the elimination stages, meaning that we could allow more than that at that stage. But maybe have a rule that there always has to be one movie that was not used yet? For the finals I guess ditch the teams completely, and just let the captains promote as they wish.
-I like the MVP idea. It takes more effort from the captains though. For that reason I guess co-captains could be necessary.

I guess I'm not offering anything new here...

Yeah my idea was to have teams that each captain would present for a different match, and we would vote based on those selections. Probably would limit it to two or three films as obviously a film is a much bigger time investement, and yeah t he MVP idea I was definitely thinking of something similar, and I think along with selecting whole films you select something specific from another film, ie the cinematography, screenplay, performance or a particular ensemble, set direction etc that you think was really stellar, the catch being you can't use that film again for that round. Basically Im just trying to decide between the size of the teams

If we do end up doing knockout it probably would be captains choosing a lot more films for each matchup and then it would be kind of a vote in general of what you've heard, but that would be a lot less involved. Ill see what happens with the nominations process
That'll do it. I thought it's not gonna be like the Best Year in Music tournament and every team will go on with the same squad. I think each team can have two parts though: main movies and extra ones and have two movies in each so people don't have to watch four films to vote (they can just vote based on the main movies) but they can if they like.

I think with this method people will just try to win with movies that are already known to most people and it'll make it a very limited experience. I think positive voting should not be limited, at least people other than the captains should be able to promote the year in question with their own movies. It's not like looking up the movies for a year in IMDB and voting based on that. In what I'm suggesting, human contribution is the key, in the form of users being able to add their own perspectives. People still would have to vote based on the movies mentioned in the match thread.

Having a team and three movies for every year has its disadvantages too.
I totally disagree. I think the team element is what makes tournaments like this so fun and inclusive.

EDIT: Just to expand a little on what I mean, if we were to just vote based on certain films we like from the years involved, there is no need for teams at all. We'd just have a matchup, and people could just look at a list of films from those years (on IMDB or whatever) and then decide which they prefer, totally negating the need for the team element, which in my view is the most interesting element of all. If we were to just vote based on all movies released that year, then it isn't a tournament that excites me or that I want to be involved in.
Personally I think 3 per matchup would be better, seeing as there is a large possibility people will be having to find time to watch as many as six new films just to vote on one matchup. I'm interested to hear more about the MVP idea though, that sounds interesting.

allright I guess Ill take the plunge and see if this takes off. Anyways this is just to set the rules in stone by getting feedback from those willing to participate. As I mentioned before the only rule I already have is that your movie is eligible if it's listed on IMDB as being from that year (ie if you have, I donno, 2002 and wanna use Lilya 4-ever, it needs to say 2002 by the title on it's main page). That's the only way to have a set-in-stone method to verifying a movie's year, so Im sticking to it to avoid having a drawn-out argument. So there. So I highly suggest you look up your desired year on IMDB and go through all the films and make sure it's one you really want to do/have seen enough films/or are willing to see more films from before you nominate

The biggest question is deciding to do a knockout or a playoff structure, where in the latter people would present multiple teams against specific years in their bracket. If the latter is chosen then it's about how big the teams are (it will probably be smaller than the album tourney as movie-watching is often a bigger time investment). I think along with highlighting specific films as a wholeI want the captain to choose another film, but not present it as a whole, but rather focus on one particular aspect you found particularly special, be it the camerawork, a particular performance or ensemble performances, the set direction, etc, to help complement each team. the catch being is that if you use something from that film, the whole film can't be used in another match at least for the first round. Ill see how that goes. Basically you will probably need at least 8 or 9 films, possibly more, to compete, so make sure it's from a year you know well enough to be ready.

And Im likely going to have the teams sent to me by PM so they can be posted right away when the match is put up, so Ill need a co game-runner for any brackets/matches Im involved in.

Anyways more feedback is craved dahlings, especially for the size of teams and the structure. I want this to work

Rules
- Year eligibility is based on what IMDB lists as the movie's release. No if, ands or butts.
- Each team presented will be two or three films in size, as well as adding an "MVP" selection to complement each team, which can be any particular aspect from a specific film, be it the cinematography, screenplay, a particular performance or set direction, etc. However, using something as an MVP, you can't use that film as a whole for the first round in any other matches.
- Vote based on the teams, not the year in general.
- Teams will have a captain and co-captain
- All teams will be pm'd
