Play Django Reinhardt. That'd be pretty sweet. Anything but pop to be honest...I like some pop but whenever it is used as background music it really irritates me.

Seems like this should depend on the kind of customers you get, as well as the atmosphere you're trying to create. Jazz adds an air of sophistication, but won't interest young people, for the most part. Pop music will appeal to a lot of people, but if you get a lot of older folks, they might not appreciate it so much. You probably want to avoid niche music, like metal or punk, unless that's the demographic you're targeting.

My problem is, I'm a compulsive name-that-tuner. When I hear a song in a restaurant, even if it's the muzak version, it occupies my attention until I retrieve title, artist, year, and album from my mental database. Then I have to blurt out my query result. Or at least I used to do that. I don't go to restaurants much any more, no one will go with me for some reason.
