Sometimes the myth is more necessary than the man. Whatever his motivations (and I'm convinced they were virtually all good) and actions, the idea of Nelson Mandela was just as, if not more important than Nelson Mandela himself. He was an image and an idea in human form that people across both races could get behind, and his influence cannot be understated. While I'm sure he was probably capable of some pretty questionable things (nobody who obtains and maintains that level of power and influence is completely innocent), the good far outweighs the bad.

Anyway, RIP to a great man who achieved great things. He belongs to everyone.

Well done, Nezzle...

I for one give great credit to the tone Mandela established after he gained power. After decades (or centuries) of abuse, the black majority in S. Africa could have easily turned on the white minority (see Zimbabwe). I hope the tenuous peace lasts.

And for your amusement, the dumbest MP in Canada does it again:

Indeed, but that's not an excuse for ignoring other aspects of a person's life. This is the kind of attitude that helps to form the idea that there's a possibility that a person with that amount of power can be all innocent.

Everything is more complicated than it looks, but it seems as though the good outweighed the bad in his case.

Great respect. Perhaps the greatest leader living until today and someone who was very inspiring. Much respect. It's very sad news.

Yah uh he was a pretty shadey guy...

Like target policemen, start terrorist oganizations, cover up your wives murders, make big bank off politics kind if shadey.

"the only type of violence we accept is organized violence in the form of armed action which is properly controlled and where the targets have been carefully selected" - Nelson Mandela

Damn. I imagine it's for the best though. Hadn't he been in the hospital for like a year? He was probably suffering.
