They open new doors and provide the ideas by which future musicians may form into more listenable music. It's sort of like how a painter may develop a new technique but become so focused on the technique that the product they create is not all that aesthetically pleasing. But a follower will come along and run with that style and turn it into something brilliant. We need both.
I'm liking this "Sacred Guitar and Violin of the Modern Aztecs" quite a bit more than Polly.

I agree unfortunately they will never get this appreciaten they desrve simply because nothing sounds like it if you look at her wiki page you can see the impact she had on other musicians http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polly_Bradfield#Remarks_from_other_musicians

I'm glad you understand and yea Sacred Guitar/Violin is awesome currently in my top ten 😉

JMan wrote:

The problem with that is that I need to understand genres in order to give better ratings and like them. I didn't understand shoegaze when I first heard loveless, and I almost hated it as a result. Once I better understood shoegaze through MBV, I loved Loveless. I need to understand genres or else I rate everything thinking with the mind of a major rock fan and I can't grow.

You don't need to understand genres to rate an album. Did you like it? How much did you like it? That's as simple as ratings have to be. And people who look at ratings are wanting to know: did you enjoy it? You don't have to understand shoegaze to enjoy My Bloody Valentine...if you enjoy My Bloody Valentine, you will likely enjoy shoegaze. Your obsession with genres is making you think in terms of what label to put on music, and you're thinking more in terms of that over what you are actually hearing. The genre should be important in finding artists that sound like artists you already like...the genre should not be a determining factor in whether or not you like an album, and how you would rate it. Doing so is limiting yourself more that thinking with the mind of a major rock fan, and it's limiting your growth.

You should be rating (if you have to) and listening in simple terms: do you like what you hear? You are taking something that you are really very new at and overcomplicating it to an extreme. Forget about what genre or genres the album fits into. It's really irrelevant for the most part. The simple question is: do you like it? And if you do, then maybe use the the basic genre to guide you to similar music. But using genre tags as part of your rating system is only making things difficult for yourself, and the people who look at ratings aren't caring about that. The main, #1 purpose for music in your life should be enjoyment. I recommend that you rate according to that one factor: enjoyment. Music isn't supposed to be complicated like that.

In keeping on topic:
Salesmen And Racists by Ike Reilly

Ike is a storyteller, and a damn fine songwriter. This is a great album, one that his label had no idea what to do with...so it died a silent death. Reilly is now to Chicago what Bob Seger once was to Detroit. The best kept secret.

Can we get back on topic, though? I'm tired of this discussion and I just want to listen to Brian Eno. I'm done getting off the topic of BEF's thread.

It's one of the most original and influential collections in the history of electronic music.
But yes, there was reggae influence. It was my first freak folk/junkanoo/calypso album. Honestly, I really like it when an album has an undeterminable genre.

Anyway, I'll direct you here.

OK, 🤣 I get it now. But the Stevie Wonder thing was when I was first getting into genres outside of rock, and I had never heard reggae in my life. I was also getting the artist mixed up with Bob Marley, so I really meant to write "soul pop". And Wikipedia called Exuma's works reggae and don't even think about saying Exuma and reggae don't sound similar for a guy who's just getting into it. Maybe you notic more of a difference due to the amount you've heard, but Wikipedia's the best I've got. And no, I don't "think I can do anything" like that. I said it was a guess. But thanks for the redirection.

I just find it incredible that you think you can define such a varied genre in one sentence when you know the square root of fuck all about it. I've heard you call Stevie Wonder and Exuma reggae.

Can you tell me what your definition is instead of laughing, please? Because I feel dumb enough already, and the last thing I need is to be a laughing stock.

I'm going through wikipedia right now:

Wikipedia wrote:

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that evolved out of the earlier genres ska and rocksteady.

Both of these have R&B listed in their stylistic origins.

Wikipedia wrote:

Typical instruments: Bass, Drums, Guitar, Organ, Brass instrument, Melodica

For the most part, I guess I was right.

Reggae: (this is a guess) a brand of Jamaican music that came from R&B and typically uses drums and brass.
