Gotta go with a lot of the obvious ones like Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad and Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood. Joaquin Phoenix in The Master is amazing. Philip Seymour Hoffman's phone argument in Punch Drunk Love is among the best scenes ever recorded. (Paul Thomas Anderson has directed an inordinate amount of amazing performances.)
Charlize Theron in Monster is as good as anything I've ever seen.
Sam Rockwell in Moon.
Ralph Fiennes in In Bruges.
Frances McDormand in Fargo.
Ben Mendhelson in Animal Kingdom.
Kathy Bates in Misery.
Ryan Gosling in Drive Lars and the Real Girl.
Tom Hardy in Bronson.

Anyway, gotta give props to Philip Seymour Hoffman in most things, but particularly in Synecdoche, New York, Jack Lemmon in The Apartment, Michael Fassbender in Shame and Fish Tank, Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet, Richard E. Grant in Withnail & I, Carey Mulligan in An Education, and John Turturro in Barton Fink.

Oh, and pretty much everybody in The Wire.
