It looks like this round is a done deal, but for those who need to prepare for later votes, here's a quick summary of Coltrane's solo career.

Before going solo, Coltrane was part of Miles Davis' "first great quintet," which recorded Kind of Blue, among other classics. During this period, Coltrane was frequently experimenting with a rapid-fire technique of soloing that critics referred to as "sheets of sound." In his solos, the notes were played so quickly that they would blend together, creating an effect that sounded like a mix between a chord and a traditional solo. Probably the two best demonstrations of this technique are

Blue Train by John Coltrane

and

Giant Steps by John Coltrane

Part of Coltrane's motivation behind the "sheets of sound" technique was to free himself of the restrictions of traditional bebop. However, by the early '60s, a much more promising innovation, known as free jazz, was being developed. Coltrane's early experiments with free jazz are demonstrated most impressively here

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

Live At The Village Vanguard by John Coltrane

Then, what is sometimes considered his crowning achievement,

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

A Love Supreme by John Coltrane

This masterpiece incorporates ideas from free jazz, modal jazz, and traditional bebop, creating a tour de force of sound and spirituality.

One last thing that might be worth checking out if you're feeling bold,

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

Ascension by John Coltrane

This is Coltrane at his free jazziest. Using eleven musicians, he created music that managed to work, despite being almost completely free of structure. This album is often credited with popularizing free jazz in the mainstream.

He has plenty more great albums, so go ahead and explore his catalog further if you're into it.
Again, I voted Coltrane.

Maybe Tomorrow's better than most the stuff on the radio, but Young and Dumb grates on me. All that I really enjoyed thoroughly off the new album was Infinity. Worth checking out Phatchance (this goes for everyone), even though he doesn't deserve to win. Just feel bad that he won't get any attention as a result...

You have to feel bad for any artist who comes up against Coltrane.

Chance Water is okay. Reminds me a bit of Astronautilus, but he doesn't deserve to even have his name mentioned in the same company as Coltrane

Chance Waters is a totally pedestrian and frankly downright irritating rapper, pretty much the stereotypical terrible white rapper ("I'd rather read the stars than read a fucking vampire drama"? I hate this sort of shallow, calculated attempt to appear 'alternative' by jumping on a boring bandwagon, in this case the anti-Twilight one). John Coltrane is a genius, an absolute joy to listen to and an artist whose music should be listened to by everybody. Possibly the easiest choice of the entire first round right here.

Really torn here, actually. I think I'm going to abstain for right now and come back. Coltrane's Tenor is INCREDIBLE, but his soprano just doesn't do it for me as much and a lot of his jazz ... well IDK, his solos are impressive but not everything there rings as incredible as his solos. I need some more time with him.

In the meantime, Phatchance put out a very good album, a very very strange mixtape of Gambino style indie music being rapped over, and then a more ... poppy album. Not bad but better for radio. It's been strange.
