Was never a huge fan of it, but I can jam to L7, Slant 6, Excuse 17, Emily's Sassy Lime, Tribe 8, Mecca Normal, and a few others. Sleater Kinny is pretty boring if you were to ask me; I never could understand why people like them so much. What I liked about riot grrrl related artists is that they have a certain attitude about them and Sleater never felt like they had that attitude.

I seem to be on one portion of the spectrum where I can't stand female vocals all that much. They just seem out of place in some styles of music (that's not to say females shouldn't make music).

EDIT: Dominatrix (not the mid 80's band) is a great band who does this genre justice.

I was Talking both the music and scene. when i have ran into riot grrls at punk, noise and grindcore shows riot grrls are usually rude, obnoxious, socially inept and spiteful. I could talk about specific encounters, but i wont. From the times I have had the unfortunate task of debating them (in university) they seem pretty focused on only their perspective and dont try to see others. Yah i have listened to their self titled on your recommendation a while ago. Its OK. Vocals fell a little flat and I was not to hot on the song structures they use. The instrumentation is good tho.

Maybe I wasn't clear on the statement made. Bongritsu said "Personal experience: Riot grrls fucking suck." I was reading that as the scene/people, but maybe he only meant the music.

My personal experience is that there's a lot of people who do dislike Riot Grrls and feminists in general, so it's good to be clear.

Personal experience: Riot grrls fucking suck. Kathleen Hanna (whos music sucks imo) is curating the next sled island, my favorite music fest , not excited. Ill be livid if she pushes her agenda on the fest, a high possibility with riot grrls

There are a few bands i enjoy tho. Rape Revenge is a really good grindcore act, check out the album paper cage, and lolita storm is a great digital hardcore/breakcore outfit Girls fucking shit up is an amazing album

I feel I've given riot grrrl a fair shot, and my personal album pick for that scene of music is Sleater-Kinney's "The Woods".

I also like Team Dresch's "Personal Best". Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear are quite alright. Aannnd I didn't know Erase Errata was considered of the riot grrrl genre, I always thought they were more noise rock or something, but fuck it, what do I know - what I mean to say is: I think they're pretty good too, btw (at least in their first album).

Anyway, with the positives said, I feel the riot grrrl scene as a whole to be weak musically, but I'm glad the scene happened.

As a side note, for a perhaps more-than-decent introduction to Japanese (female) punk rock during the 90s, I recommend the various artists release called "Benten Punk Bentoh".

I have that on my to-read list but I have no idea where to get a hold of it! I'll probably have to order it, I doubt a local library in the Southern US would have it. 🙄 Sucks about the first chapter though.
