Jhereko wrote:

I think a large majority of us on here are over-thinkers because a large majority of us lean somewhere towards introversion. And the more privileged we are the more we over-think because...well because we have time to. And like many others here in the past it has crippled me and my relationships and is basically what I credit for me being diagnosed with depression a little over a year ago.

The thing that has worked best for me (and something I need to be more consistent with recently) is meditation. I know that sounds hippyish and whatever but it's actually really useful. To me meditation is basically a clearing of the thoughts. Everything slows down and you can fully appreciate the present as opposed to focusing on the past and/or the future (as us over-thinkers have a tendency to do). If you can meditate for even 5-10 minutes a day I think you'll see the benefits. My method - find a quiet place to sit and close your eyes. Focus on your breathing and then after a little bit start to focus on other sounds in your environment - could be a car in the distance or birdsong or the hum of an appliance. Take note of all of it and then if you can allow yourself to kind of drift off into nothingness and then come back. You have to actively try and not think though and that becomes easier the more you do it.

Pretty soon you'll find that 10-30 minutes a day seeps into the rest of your existence and stuff that would normally bother you when you start to think about is easier to look at for a second, appreciate it for what it is and just move on to more important things.

Obviously I can only speak to what worked for me but I'm a much happier person these days for not over-thinking things. I still have some way to go but I'm quite confident I don't suffer from depression any more.

also drugs helped a lot - by that I mean MDMA and acid NOT anti-depressants.

Well this was a really relatable post. Maybe I should try meditation. Or maybe I should do more drugs.

Not to go away, just to disengage from the computer world. Do something more physically engaging. Computers are depressing. I'm stuck at one for work all day. It drains the life out of me. I spend far too much time in front of a computer.
Lack of inspiration I think is healed with time. On one hand you could try to experience as much as you can to get inspiration, but sometimes it helps just as much to be in solitude with your own thoughts, whatever you do - it will come, just don't look for it.

Not desiring to think about things is different, be it political issues or interactions with people, it's about looking into the future and the possible outcomes. There's virtue both in always looking to the future and trying to live in the moment, I think, and we all shift from one to the other.

Everyone here, from what I can tell, is mentally healthy.

Now we're over-thinking about if we over-think, when really we should stop over-worrying about ourselves.

Outlaw,My suggestion is get out. Get away from the computer. If you're feeling something, or my your mind is becoming overactive, put it down on paper. Or pick up your guitar. Put those thoughts and feelings into something physical. That release will be heavily therapeutic. It won't cure you of your concerns, but it will be a far more positive experience than sitting and allowing them to consume you

What sort of thoughts are we talking about here? We all have thoughts, all the time, I don't understand how you can 'let your brain remain dormant' - even original thoughts and ideas arrive at odd times and at all times. Are we talking about a lack of inspiration?

Things just wander into my head. Are you forcing ideas or waiting around?

Oddly enough, I found that going and finding my idea book introduced an entire concept for a story right into my head! It was richly developed in a matter of minutes, I've just got to write it down. ;P
Maybe I've just not been thinking and stimulating my brain enough, I've been letting my brain remain dormant, so it's cool, I've got this. 😉
Also I find that going outside gives me thoughts. I'll go outside more then.
