i probably do listen to over 1000 albums a year and it's sort of a combination of a couple of those. Some albums i'll just listen to once, maybe for the first time, or revisit once, and some, especially new albums, i'll give a couple of listens to. Of course, some of my favorites would receive more spins in any given year.

I listen to every album that I decide to give a spin 2-3 times before deciding whether or not to add it to itunes. The way I decide whether to add it is by asking myself whether I can see myself listening to this album a few more times or whether it will simply take up space in my library. This guarantees that every album in my collection is adored by me and I get to know my music really well rather than simply listening for the sake of it. If there was the option I would have selected "listening to 100 albums 10 times"

For many years I have listened to the same albums a million times, I felt right with that so it was ok. Two years ago, I decided to start buying all these albums I had Always loved, because I had not the original ones, just 2 or 3. When I started doing that, I also started to discovery some new great music, and more, and more.. Now I really enjoy discovering new music, but I Always listen deeply to an artist, and sometimes I love to listen again to one of my old favorites, too.
So it doesn't depend only on the album but also on the period of our lives, I guess.

It's like what Brandon says I guess, I never put too much thought into what music I listen to, just go for whatever I feel like listening to at that particular time, whether it's an old favourite or something I've just discovered. If there's nothing that interests me enough in my itunes at a particular time that's when I go searching for something new.

Often I find I'm way too comfortable listening to what I already know over discovering new stuff, which means I probably don't listen to enough new stuff. Doesn't bother me really though, I'm not on a quest to hear everything, as long as I've got music I enjoy listening to it's cool even if it is the same old.

Of the new albums I listen to, I probably go back to ~50% of them for a second listen within a week. Of those, I'll listen to ~50% multiple times. Usually those are the new favorites and I'll listen to them as many times as I feel like. So... I guess it's an inverse exponential distribution of listens.

No idea what that means for the poll, though.

Unless it's a terrible first listen, I'll try to give each album at least 4-6 listens to try to fully get into it.

I like to listen to as many different albums as I can. However, this can sometimes make it so that I don't really remember any of them.

But of the albums I loved, Beyonce's latest, Kozelek and Lavalle's, Dam-Funk and Steve Arrington's, Chance The Rapper's, m b v, these are all albums I heard fifteen, twenty, thirty, forty, god knows how many times. Other albums, the albums in my top 60 or 70 for the year, are all albums I must have heard at least six or seven times, and many more in some cases (although a little less in others) - take Yung Simmie's Basement Musick or Nick Cave's Push The Sky Away for example, both albums that weren't anywhere near my favourites of the year but albums I found myself going back to very regularly. Then again, I have a lot of free time and can afford to spend time relistening to albums I don't necessarily love (though I don't really understand struggling with albums I don't even like). But yeah, basically what Brandon said, except for the "getting tired" bit. I listen to as much new music as possible in order the find the favourites I can spend forever going back to.

I mean, not so much getting tired as craving something different, or simply craving more music. XD Poorly worded, I suppose.

To me the whole purpose of listening to a bunch of new albums is to find those albums you can play 20 times. And then when one gets tired of that album one starts searching again.

this is a great question. I often have to stop myself, because I can get a little over zealous in listening to new music. most new music i listen to, i will give at least 2-3 spins and the stuff i like i probably listen to at least 15-20 times. Wow, i wonder how many times, in a given year, i listen to an album.

A mix of all. Concentrate on the ones you love as well as discovering new listens, and trying to give albums another chance. Best approach IMO.
