I remember picking up their first album in Paris... always liked 'em, despite not quite being able to have anywhere near a full understanding of their lyrics, quite a dark and fascinating story off-stage as well

Noir Désir disbanded following the downfall of their singer (and his imprisonment in Lithuania), and are still seen as cult figures in France, one of the few French rock references everyone has (they did enjoy great success here). To my mind, the band's overrated, however I will advise two records in which Noir Désir's guitar player, Serge Teyssot-Gay, was involved : On croit qu'on en est sorti, his solo LP from 2000 ; and L'Angle mort (2009), a project he took part in under the monicker Zone Libre, and which involved French underground female rapper Casey and Hamé, from La Rumeur, probably my favorite French rap band.

Noir Désir's best studio album may be 666.667 Club.
