Usagi Drop

While attending his grandfather's funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is surprised to discover that his grandfather had an illegitimate child with an unknown mother! The rest of his family, fearing the obligation and embarrassment, want nothing to do with the silent little girl, Rin. Sensing her imminent abandonment and outraged by his complacent family members, Daikichi decides to adopt her himself! ...yet he may have underestimated the difficulty of balancing his work, family, and love life with his role as her guardian.

Directed by Kanta Kamei (of Nanana's Buried Treasure, Saekano) what we have here is one of the most sublime, heartfelt, and sincere dramas of 2011. It's a bit short, but much like the previous featured anime it does what it has to in it's time quite well. It's similar in a way to Itsurou Kawasaki's Papakiki with less pandering, and it is probably one of the best examples of drama in the medium. It's a shame that it is so short.

I don't watch too much anime and I haven't watched in a long time, but my favorites were Death Note, Monster, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, No. 6, Black Lagoon, and Black Butler.

I know I'm a bit late to the discussion train with Kids On The Slope, but now that I'm finished it, I have the biggest smile on my face right now. Watanabe has done it again with incorporating a simple premise but having memorable and loveable characters, beautiful animation and a fantastic soundtrack to boot. The only complaints that I have with the series is that while the writing is also really great, it's formula seems a tad repetitive, character makes mistake; they realise their mistake; walks off; repeats next episode. It also may be too sentimental for other peoples liking. Despite that, I was engaged throughout every episode making me laugh, cry and making me anticipate what happens next episode. I regret not seeing it when it was airing, but at least I was able to see this series at last and I'm glad Gowi reminded me of it once again.

Kids on the Slope

The beginning of summer, 1966. Because of his father's job situation, freshman high school student Kaoru Nishimi moves by himself from Yokosuka to Kyushu to live with relatives. Until then, Kaoru was an honor roll student who tended to keep to himself, but meeting notorious bad boy Sentaro Kawabuchi starts to change him. Through his devil-may-care classmate, Kaoru learns the attractions of jazz and finds the first person he can call a "friend". He also discovers how much fun it is to play music with a pal.

Directed by Shinichirō Watanabe (of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) this one is unsurprisingly another mark of quality from the veteran director. I don’t generally go for romance/drama flavors of the medium, but somehow this one is another one of the exceptions that has a lot of charm to it. My only issue seems to be it is way too short as I could watch a story revolving around this for at least twenty-four episodes or more. This has only increased in quality over repeated viewings and through the backdrop of jazz and a lot of heart into themes of friendship, love, and loss – I love it and encourage others to watch it.

Hibike! Euphonium Is a supremely comfy anime so far. That's really all I expect from it and really, that's the best outcome.

Other then that I'm kinda uninterested in this season. I'll watch the new Kinro mosaic season and the Yuki Chan thing.

The campiness of Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! is too much, yet I can't stop watching! 🤣 It's a decent satire of the mahou shoujo genre that not only mocks the cliches, but embraces them as well, if that makes any sense.

EDIT: Just finished it today, actually. It's not bad. A little repetitive and formulaic, but I guess that's just the genres structure. Like I said, it provides decent satire and that's really all it needs to be. It's no Madoka Magica, but it doesn't try to be that, and it's better for it.

In other new yuru yuri is getting a third season, which i guess is ok. The last OVA they made they changed the background color palette to much darker colors then its normal bright ones. it was pretty bad hopefully they change back for the third season

Shirobako – What I’ve barely seen so far has suggested this might be one of the best choices of the late 2014 season. At the core what we have here is a post-club anime with the same tones of slice of life dramatics and screwball comedy. So I’ve been watching a few things as of late (a few via recommendations suggested to me), and I think it’s shaping up nicely for what I’ve been really liking.

Fafner (Dead Agressor: Exodus) – The sequel of one of the best mecha’s of its day, Exodus seems like a proper continuation so far for the Fafner series, there’s a good sense of buildup and the characterization is fairly good for an mecha considering we will be seeing a lot of active action scenarios and likely traumatic character moments. I have high hopes for this one to stay cohesive and consistent; which frankly, I have no reason to think it’ll tank creatively due to how I feel about Fafner in general. First impressions are really high, so maybe four stars but it only has a small handful of episodes out so far.

Yona of the Dawn – The first episode tricks you into thinking you are entering a nice imagination that suggests a slice of life harem settled in a period that reflects medieval eastern asia; but what you end up getting is an adventure anime that has more nuances that I expected alongside action/adventure tropes with great pacing and progressing characterization. This is my favorite of its season and I think it is utterly fantastic and if you are avoiding it you are missing out on a great anime that has IMO the best OP of Fall 2014.

Other – I’m also starting Yuri Kuma Arashi, Horimiya (Hori-san to Miyamura-kun), and Rolling Girls; but I’m only one episode in so I don’t have much beyond favorable first episode impressions.

Started watching Trigun. What's interesting is that I bought the DVDs a few months ago - making it the only anime series I have on DVD so far - even though I didn't know whether I was going to like it or not. Just went by what I heard of it. It was so uncharacteristically risky in hindsight, but it's a risk well paid off. Loving it right now.
