Shame on you guys if Ghostface leaves now (seems like it's what's going to happen); Sufjan Stevens is good, but his music never really connected with me.

I don't know of any artist, let alone rapper, whose lyricism and delivery are as potent as Ghostface Killah's. He's able to evoke whole scenes in just a few words, paint vivid, hyper-realistic tales one minute and relay surreal, hyperactive states of mind the next. Even his mistakes tell a story (I know I've referenced it before, but the way he raps, "we never had baked Alaskan" rings completely true not because poor black kids growing up in housing projects in New York wouldn't normally eat baked Alaska, but because he doesn't even know that it's called baked Alaska). His songs are totally relatable despite the context for them being so utterly foreign to most of us. He's always had a fantastic ear for beats, and at his best his albums can leave you breathless and dizzy, surrounded by ostensibly comforting soul sounds twisted and bent out of shape, trying to keep up with his verbal and vocal acrobatics. He opens a door to an alien world and pushes you in headfirst, leaving you to fend for yourself. He is the single most unique and engrossing character hip-hop has ever produced, and his string of albums have been remarkably consistent for two decades. I can't think of too many weirder artists who have flown so close to the mainstream sun and still come out completely intact, warts and all. I think Sufjan is great, and I was actually just thinking about how Illinois and Fishscale are strangely similar albums, epic, twisted tributes to specific places that are full of emotive little vignettes that do such a great job of giving you a fully realised picture whilst still leaving so much up to the imagination. But there isn't anybody else remotely like Ghostface in this tournament (we have Nas, but for all his greatness dude is like the anti-fun), and he deserves to go further.

Fuck, I nominated Sufjan and I'm tempted to go Ghostface. I adore Supreme Clientele, and Ghostface is probably in my top 3 rappers of all time, but my strongest love with Wu-Tang lies with 36 Chambers, and Sufjan is one of my favorite artists. I'd do some sort of promotion for him, but I honestly can barely think legibly right now so I'll just let this one play out how it will.

Ahh crap. I love a lot of what Sufjan's done, but gotta give credit where credit's due, Ghostface is one of the all time greatest rappers.

He's my favorite artist and has my favorite album, but it'll be tough to see either one leave.

It's an intriguing matchup, but it's super easy for me. Ghostface made 2 of my top 10 fave rap albums in Fishscale and Supreme Clientele. I just love those 2 records and also the little I've heard from Iron Man and his album last year is also amazing. I like Sufjan, but not even in the same league with Ghostface.

It's hard because I like their solo output similarly (it ranges from good to incredibly blah) but Ghostface has obviously been involved (albeit not as the central driving force) with some of my absolute favorite music ever. It then becomes whether we compare their lows and the lowest low loses or if I let Ghostface rest on others' successes. Though it's apples to oranges and one of the weirder polls I've decided to take part in, I have to give it to... Ghostface. The guy hasn't ever made a bad album that I've heard, and Sufjan has that embarrassing BQE shit.
