Can you believe I’ve only heard 2 of your top 10 here?!
Question, with the benefit of hindsight, is there an album from 2016 that has aged well, or has become more special or recommendable or memorable than your initial rank would indicate? |
I'm surprised!
And for sure, the first album that comes to mind is True Sadness by The Avett Brothers. When I first heard it, I really liked it (as I do with just about every Avett Brothers album), but the more I've listened to it, especially over the past year or so, the more I've fallen in love with it.
"No Hard Feelings" holds a very very special place in my heart and is probably my favorite Avett Brothers song at this moment. I've listened to it so many times and it never fails to move me every time. "I Wish I Was" has also really really grown on me.
It's not a perfect album, I'll admit that "Smithsonian" is probably one of the weakest Avett Brothers songs I've ever heard, but it's a really special album to me, more than it was when I first heard it.
It's even better listening to it after you watch the Judd Apatow documentary on them while they were recording the album. _________________ Progressive Rock

Somehow I missed that You had posted this response.
Interesting. I mostly have been prejudiced against the Avett Brothers this last decade. Need to delve into them now that I am done with my overwhelmingly assholery. They have some cool songs. Will check out that album at some point after listening to their 2 or 3 peak and most popular albums. _________________ -Ryan

No worries! And I can definitely understand some of the push against The Avett Brothers recently - they've certainly leaned pretty hard into their pop and slick-production sensibilities, but man they can write some beautiful lyrics.
Other albums on the list that have grown on me over time would also include Midwest Farmer's Daughter (I've really grown to love Margo Price a lot, and I've revisited that album a good bit) and Cardinal (I've also had a somewhat recent new appreciation of Pinegrove, more than I think I did in 2016). _________________ Progressive Rock

Avetts are squarely in my top five most listened artists in the past decade. As it is, I think of myself as late to the party and of the relatively "slick" I and Love and You generation of fans. But I had a real hard time with the level of production and prefabrication on the last tour. Pretty discouraging, really, as they are amongst our favorite bands to see live.

I came around to the Avetts right around when I And Love And You came out (both that and Emotionalism are two of my favorite albums ever). I'm generally fine with the slicker production, I don't mind they've been working with Rick Rubin. It takes a little getting used to, especially since I do love their early, more raw stuff, but I also understand that they want to evolve as artists and I get that.
I will agree though, Closer Than Together, while good, is probably the worst album they've released yet. But the one they released last year, The Third Gleam, is really good, I'd recommend giving that a shot. _________________ Progressive Rock
