Yeah I agree with Baystateofheart. My impression is that Stevens wasn't intending to be demeaning, but as Baystate's wikipedia quote notes: it reveals the implicit sexist bias that we as a society have against women. While I think it is a ding on Stevens, it's more of a ding on society (British and American at least) as a whole. We fucking suck, and we need to get better.

Sort of non sequitur but: one my (former) favorite Laotian dishes is oob bae (goat stew) and every time I ordered "oob bae" I wanted to say "oob bae bae it's a wild world"

This discussion proves that even the least controversial albums of all time can get controversial. It's a wild world

I always found it rather sexist. That's even as a kid, before I knew what sexism was.

Even if we limit it's intent to a single individual rather than any kind of gender generalization, at the very best, it's still damned condescending. While I like the tune and can garner some sympathy for a guy losing his love in a general sense, I still found this song rather off putting; she's growing and it's time for her to spread her wings. The response is hardly that of a sympathetic lover, but rather a controlling putz who responds badly.

That said, overall still an excellent album with lots of great songs, both hits and classic deep cuts.
