You would think they would have the sense to come up with a less disgusting album cover....
Apparently the story is that the band were on a plane and band member "Panda Bear" was having strawberry jam on toast. He looked down at his food and stated that that was what he wanted the album to sound like "something that's really synthetic and sharp and futuristic looking," but also "tangy and sweet, almost in a kind of aggressive way in terms of the way it tastes". and I suppose they wanted to recreate that for the cover.
Either way this is a great album and "Fireworks" is an essential song in their catalog for a reason. "#1" sounds magical and amazing live. and I agree with the apparent consensus that "For Reverend Green" is the best track here.
I also think the album is better than Panda Bear's Person Pitch from the same year.
I love Animal Collective. One of my favorite bands, an embodiment of my youth and joy. I prefer MPP, Person Pitch and Feels to SJ, but I still think its a great album. Loads of energy. Good choice.
